Apple could allow iPhone sideloading with iOS 17

Would be interesting to see how in depth they check everything listed below. A number of apps don’t really fit that user experience

‘Our App Store Review Guidelines require apps to be safe, provide a good user experience, comply with our privacy rules, secure devices from malware and threats, and use approved business models’

Malware on the store isn’t related to sideloading apps.
IMO, it is more because Apple charges every developer 99 USD a year to publish apps to their respective app stores. It eliminates most of the trash by having a higher barrier to entry.

There are numerous applications that are so specific to their niche that going through the app store isn't worth it. For example, if a company develops an application for internal use that they will never share with the outside world.

The other annoying thing is outright censorship. App-store versions of Telegram have certain channels blocked. On Android I just sideloaded the version from Telegram's website. On iOS there is nothing I can do other than use the web-version.

Nicegram.

If the door was wide open I struggle to think about what I would want to side-load that isn’t an illegal motivation to start with and even then I’m already catered for via the AppStore with Plex and LunaSea.

I don't quite get it ... what would you get on it ?

Could guys that don't want to pay Apple tax (ie Spotify ) potentially make their apps available on it ?

Either way - not something I'd use

There are a few apps on MacOS I have to sideload because Apple won't allow them on the app store like pCloud, Lunar, Amphetamine addon, Transmission or qbittorrent etc. If I can do it on iOS as well it'll be great.

I'm not sure what those apps are ... :/

Since Apple have no control over the 2nd store - do you think guys like Spotify, EPIC, X etc could also go to the new store to avoid paying ? If they leave a copy of their app on the official store - great. But I hope they don't start segmenting the store.

I don't know how it is going to work but from what I understand Apple will not be forced to adopt third payment integration for App Store apps so there might very well end up being significant segmentation.

But seeing as this could be a potential issue for Apple I suppose they would open up the payment option as to avoid the above.

iOS 17 could let iPhone users sideload apps

Apple is working on allowing iPhone users to download apps from sources outside its own store with the upcoming iOS 17 update.

That is according to Bloomberg's resident Apple expert, Mark Gurman, who explained the change was necessary to comply with new European Union (EU) regulations, which came into effect in November 2022.

But if only on EU accounts then it won't be so bad for them.

I'm not really sure it's considered side-loading on MacOS. It's not a closed system, it never has been.
