Apple designing new chip for MacBooks

A report by Bloomberg suggests that Apple is designing a new chip for future MacBooks that would take on more of the functionality currently handled by Intel processors.

So if I understand correctly, this will be like a sub-CPU for Apple specific components and processes, moving these from primary CPU, which will still be an Intel chip?

Yes seems stupid. The Microsoft approach is much better. Get Windows 10 working on ARM so you don't need two chips.

I don't think you really understand what Apple are doing here..

There are 2 things at play, one is that the WHOLE intel chip can be powered down, and a much more efficient ARM based chip can retain power and do basic functions.

The other is that Apple are hedging their bets in terms of their Intel reliance for mainstream processors.

Pretty much yeah.... and its actually an interesting move that could provide some interesting low power/sleep mode functionality to the Macbook line.

As an added "benefit" that is entirely possible.

I doubt Apple would spend 100's of millions of R&D dollars to stop hackintoshs/vms.

Perhaps get more out of a lower spec CPU than was possible before - requiring less cooling etc too. Interesting move
