Apple discontinuing third-generation Apple TV

The gradual death of the third-gen Apple TV is continuing this evening, as Apple has officially discontinued the device. In an email sent out today to employees and education partners, obtained by 9to5Mac, Apple confirmed that it is discontinuing the device, shifting its focus entirely to the fourth-gen, tvOS-powered model.

In the email, Apple explained that it would fulfill order backlog for the device, but pointed partners towards the other available products for new purchases.

Effective immediately, Apple TV (3rd generation), MD/199LL/A, has reached end of life and is now discontinued. The Apple Supply team is going to fulfill all shippable backlog.

The death of the third-gen Apple TV has been gradual. Last month, Apple made it more difficult to locate the device on its online store, while retail locations began pulling the device from shelves.

Apple has still not commented on its phasing out of the third-gen model, though it’s not surprising. The third-gen model was introduced in 2012 and was quietly updated a year later. Since then, Apple has shifted its focus to the tvOS-powered fourth-gen Apple TV.

Currently, Apple is still selling refurbished models of the third-gen Apple TV for $59, but supply of refurb devices is always incredibly limited, so they probably won’t be there for long. After the refurbished models disappear, Apple will seemingly have stopped sales of the third-gen Apple TV all together.

It’s unclear if the third-gen Apple TV will receive any additional software updates, but the device was last updated in February with a variety of security fixes.

It remains to be seen if Apple will officially comment on the discontinuing of the third-gen Apple TV, as it has done with other products, or if it will be a silent process. Nevertheless, the fourth-gen model is now the company’s primary focus and we should expect updates there for a long time to come.

I still have one just as an air play receiver.

What is the best local price for the 4th gen ?

And does it play Showmax ? And can you download Showmax movies/series to it ?

Do the downloads work to the Apple TV 4th Gen ?

I want to download movies or episodes so that I can watch them without any lurches which happens with my 100Mbps FTTH.

Odd. I have a 4MBps ADSL and it's smooth?

Showmax worked fine on my 4MB Uncapped and works pretty much the exact same on my 20MB Capped now.

No you can't download to it, not last I checked anyway.

The Mi Box is $69 and supports 4k. Heck even the newly launched Chromecast Ultra is $69 and supports 4k. The Apple TV is R2899 and doesn't support 4k. Lol.

I'll happily forego 4K to not have a ****ty sub-standard experience.

Also 4K that those devices "support" still isn't the real deal UHD so Apple was pretty damn right to wait it out and not jump the gun. There are hardly a handful of proper UHD real-deal TV's on the market.

Its a wonderful device. I paid R700 for mine from someone who found it "too fiddly"

No. He is just being a fanboy. Sure many TV's out there don't support the Ultra HD premium spec but they can still do UHD. Even the iPhone can produce 4k video. Then there's Go Pro, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Video...

No, he's being factually correct. The fanboy (or anti-fanboy in this instance) is you.

UHD is not just about resolution. It goes way beyond that.

The 4K you are going ga ga for is nothing more than current 1080p TV's at higher resolution.

Very little to no benefit gained until you have a monstrous TV.
