Apple falling behind ...

If I were to buy me a Toyota Hilux "truck" is it for Toyota to make sure I do not smuggle perlemoen or guns in the back of MY vehicle?

Is it for Google, Samsung, HTC, etc to make sure I don't have pirated music and videos on MY device?

Why is Apple doing it? Google also sells music in their Play Store in the US so the Music Industry demands it argument won't stand. Google PlayStore customers are not restricted by Android to share anything fom device to device using Bluetooth/etc.

So, it must be about forcing Apple customers to use the iTunes shop to make money. But is the money made in enforcing this closed system worth it in the long run? More and more people, and the younger generations especially, demand more freedom. They don't want a company like Apple to tell them that they cannot share their music and videos.

Imagine Toyota trying to stop their customers from loading crates from one Toyota to another Toyota ...

But that is what Apple is doing.

That is my main frustration. It helps little they flatten the OS look but the damn device is still under lockdown because ... Apple says so.

I'm not saying Apple are right or wrong, just my thinking on why. For me personally, I have never wanted to share music with anyone, so it doesn't bother me, but I do understand that some people might want to. However, I do think that it helps Apple when they are negotiating with the music industry for them to say that they do not encourage sharing from their devices, and in the long term that'll allow them to offer even better services.

Can the music industry afford to lose the iTunes Store? Nope. They've become dependent on Apple too. I believe the time has come for Apple to say "We've protected you for long enough and we as a manufacturing company do not want to be left behind and become ignored because we police piracy on you behalf.". It's time for Apple to open up sharing of files.

But will they? I doubt it ... not yet. They will only do so when it becomes clear that the market will go elsewhere to get open devices and content and it hurts their bottom line.

It is frustrating. It is so easy to move content around using Android but such a damn pain do the same with Apple.

It depends how much they want to protect the interests of their partners. I'd say it's good ethical and business practice though.

Why is Apple doing it?
Apple's practices in this regard have helped foster a safe haven ecosystem that makes them STILL the first port of call for content owners or app developers. They get the best that's out there because the developers recognise that Apple goes out of their way to protect the interests of monetising their development or content.

If I want to load up pirated music or movies on my iPad it's pretty easy to do so via iTunes. Plus, it was Steve Jobs who actually pushed the movement towards DRM-free music sales. Without his involvement the electronic music industry would be even more backwards and locked down because the record labels were in favour of total 1-device DRM.

It is frustrating. It is so easy to move content around using Android but such a damn pain do the same with Apple.
Yes it is. But anyway this is your personal rant and what's it got to do with any of the articles? You were all pointing at them saying that they're only repeating EXACTLY what you've been trying to say all along but you haven't even mentioned the content in them. You're just confusing strategies with flaws because they contradict what YOU want to do with a device.

Want to talk about Apple's failure in the cloud? Man I'm on board with you 100%, and you know what, so are a huge number of Apple fans. Want to talk about how they still don't fundamentally get the internet and social services; how it's probably a cultural issue in their DNA and it will take an enormous surgery to get them on track with it? I can't agree more. Want to discuss the possibility that iOS is going to need more than a superficial reskinning? All a-ok.

If you follow tech news, you'd know Apple want to launch a Pandora type "iRadio" application. In order to negotiate with the music industry, and get the most favorable rates for themselves to make a profit, and to reduce the monthly subscription cost, this may still be necessary.

Are Apple falling behind? I don't think it is fair to compare Apple to every Android phone maker out there. Apple have 1 mobile release a year, versus how many by Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony etc. If you look at it on a model by model basis I think the gap has closed but Apple are by no means behind. One also needs to take into account that Apple doesn't focus on specs like many Android makers do. Apple focuses on the user experience and because they have such tight control over the OS and hardware integration, making it much more efficienct, they don't necessarily need to play top trumps with specs. They also don't do the gimmicky stuff like Zoe, S(insert something here) and the like. Most of the time when Apple releases something it is fully baked (Siri being released as a Beta and Maps obviously being the stand outs)

I think with a new UI and some innovative feature that they tend to include in S models, the 5S will be a massive success. One of the main reasons people see Apple as falling behind is because the OS has had pretty much the same look and feel for a long long time.

Apple is very protective of users' privacy, and for that reason is strict on how apps interact with the OS and with each other.

According to this Apple is not so protective about your privacy as you may think ...

That's a really strange article to use as an example. It only refers to how Apple will protect data if the US government ask for it. I really don't think the US government is at all interested in my photo stream or location data!

What I meant is that Apple make a much bigger effort than Google to make sure all apps in the App Store are legit, for example, and they'll take down any app that doesn't meet their standards.

Okay Apple folk ... then please help me with this:

I am a graphic designer (2nd profession). I work with a multitude of folders on my computer to store graphics in different stages of use and for different customers. So I have a lot of folders with digital art in it. I need that to stay in those folders when I move the stuff over to my iPad. Things mustn't get mixed-up and the names must not be IMG_0213 as the name is important.

How do I get that right with iTunes and an iPad? Please tell me as I am frustrated as hell at present.

Wit Android I create a mirror of my folders on the tablet and all my file names stay intact ... and I can drag and drop files without iTunes. So please help me get the same on my iPad. I will appreciate the help.

No cloud (dropbox type) solutions please. Too much data/bandwidth = cost!

If you save all those folders in a single "master" folder, then use the Photos tab in iTunes to sync them, they should appear as albums on your iPad.

Bought Air Sharing for iPad now ... let's give this thing a try. Thanks AJ.

Update: Doesn't resolve my frustrations. Cannot drag and drop files (single or multiple). One an create a file structure but must then take a file at a time across using wi-fi or in iTines first drop everything in the overall container under the app (sharing) and then on the device manually move them to the folders you want them in. At least the file names stay correct and the folders can be mirrored, but it is still a messy process. AND my photo/graphic editing apps don't see the AirShare file container/structure ... file must be send to iPad's central Photo depository anyway ... so ... :-(

DropBox access in AirShare also not working ... keeps asking for authorisation despite providing the correct credentials. I get e-mail to confirm new that new app has been linked ... but no access on iPad itself ...

Oh crap, forgot you Windows users needed an app for that.... My bad. On Ubuntu, you could access the Airshare folder via Nautilus. As for editing a file on iOS with different applications, not gonna happen, ever. esp if you understand the way iOS works.

In iOS each app has it's own "file store" and no one app can access the others store its just the way things are.

Mine worked last time I used Dropbox.

Just a thought.

If you go the full Apple fully legal route (as a great many Apple people are quite happy to so) then you never need to touch iTunes to sync anything.

Need music? Buy it from the iTunes Music Store, or re-download what you already own.

Need Movies? Same deal.

Need books? Same deal.

Need games? Same story.

Once you embrace the entire Apple experience and mind set its really not all that difficult.

Problem is people want to have one foot inside one door and the other in another and that's simply not the Apple way. It's all or nothing, and when you accept that it works exactly as intended and pretty damn well at that.

If you can't accept that, well then you'll never ever be truly happy with an Apple device.

Even if I went the full Apple way how do I get my graphic files across to my iPad without it changing the name to IMG_1234 when using iTunes? Why on earth can iOS not work accept file names I want for my graphics? Why MUST it be random camera file names? Then when I sync'd using iTunes it won't allow to delete the sync'd file on the device. it must be attached to iTunes to do so. This is the full Apple way ... and it sux big time.

Some apps play well with others, some don't. Some share, some don't.

This is the sort of nonsense Apple must sort out before they worry about flattening the OS. First fix the frikkin car before you worry about "unpimping" it. Give me a way to move files on my device without iTunes and without killing file names. The cloud is just not practical in SA when working with large files and many files.

I can easily do the above using Android. And no, I'm not trying to have a fruit fight here. I'm just trying to find ways to do my work on Apple in a way that makes sense without the need for a laptop to tether to iTunes all the time. I want Apple to wake up and realize people want/need more control over their files (sharing, moving, renaming, etc). Not hating Apple.

As things stand I am forced to get work done on Android and play and socialise on iOS.

I use Goodreader to do exactly that.

That's not Apple's fault.

No they dont - or rather the numbers of people who do are negligible.
