Apple iCloud announced

Very cool but going to be very expensive. VC and MTN VERY happy. Data use will go through the clouds.

Yep, the cloud was the most interesting part of the keynote for me. BeVonk! you have it there... 5 gigs of space in the cloud with data being synced between three devices... I'm going to need a bigger data package!

Won't Apple then make deals with the network providers so not bill the syncing traffic like you can get on the BB plan.
Otherwise it has no point. The more data on the phone you create the more traffic the more you pay.

So basically it's dropbox for Joseph only? Why not just use dropbox and not be tied in?

I could see a Android iCloud type service with Picasa and Google Music store coming maybe Google should go buy Dropbox while they at it.

I'm pretty sure they specified that syncing would only occur over wifi. So cellular data packages aren't going to be the issue, adsl ones are.

Even if I had access to this facility, I very much doubt I would use it.

Why not be tied in? My understanding is you get more than twice the data (compared to the free dropbox accounts) and seamless integration across iOS and OsX devices.

Audio Galaxy for streaming my 1TB music on my 5GB data plan....
Goople apps and mail cloud computing....

we've been having it!

Ok, I did a bit of reading on iCloud and my understanding is that its basically a workaround to a iOS limitation with benefits.

Before you start flaming me here is what I understand. iOS has a limitation in that it has no Unified file system so one application can not directly communicate to another as each one has its own file system. With iCloud Apple gives the developers a "file system" where they can save settings/files and more that can be accessed by other applications.

The benefits that come with this is that you will be able to access it with all your iDevices, example if a developer stores bookmarks on iCloud instead of the apps own filesystem you will be able to access that bookmarks not only with other applications on the device but also the same application on another device that you own.

Only issues I have with this is that it still needs to download and upload files after manipulation, example if you have a document in iCloud to edit it your device will download the file and upload it again when you hit save. You will also be able to Download music from iCloud into your current music library, it does not allow you to stream the music from iCloud. If a developer decides to use iCloud to store settings your device will need to download that data every time its launched(Note: launch not resume). Data costs might be a issue with this but as it gets cheaper over time it would be nice to have.
