Apple iMac valuation

Well seems iStore will trade it in for 11k if I got the model right and it’s in absolutely perfect condition which they are known to fight down.

I would just do that. They won’t give you money in pocket and it will be a voucher but can go to the next phone upgrade or something.

I think it was only ever offered on the bigger iMacs never the baby ones.

Wasn’t removed as much as Displayport just could no longer support the resolution when they went 5K natively and when the port was dropped in favour of HDMI/USB-C it was never returned as a feature.

Universal Control pretty much took over this space even though it’s not quite the same thing it serves a similar underlying purpose.
It just isn’t great as I suggested Mac in the beginning because of the resale, updates and flexibilty.

And now he’s got no resale, updates or flexibility so time to throw a 4K monitor in the bin

It’s 5+ years old dude and bought at the worst time before a major shift in the industry.

Just poor timing really.

And see my post above. That’s probably near what he bought it for in 2019 so resale is better than anything else out there that’s 5 years old.

They were about R20,000ish new - he just didn’t expect a 75% knock.

He hoped to buy a Mac Mini and use the screen - but that didn’t work either … which is why he got the MacBook.

But to me, R5k doesn’t make sense when you look at the price of Mac Mini.

I was looking for a Mac Mini a few months back (purely to store files) and there nothing at R5k that matched the specs. And that’s no screen

Like I said if iStore is willing to give 11k even if in credit/vouchers that’s an excellent deal and way more than I expected.

11k is only a 45% knock and that’s actually pretty astounding and no non-Apple device would get the same.

Almost guaranteed if they manage to make a profit selling that it’s because they are sending it through a very specific channel that requires Intel machines to run something legacy, but no man on the street it buying that iMac for 11k when they can get a M*-based unit for a little bit more and know it’s going to be supported for years to come.

The MacBook Air M1 has cannibalised this market as your mate buying the MacBook attests to as the M*-silicon line of products is just that far ahead.

Didn’t realise an M series iMac was R11k - but then makes sense.

I’ll let him know

No no I’m not saying they are.

I mean you can get an M1-powered product like a MacBook that is only slightly more expensive and offers better value.

I mean sure you could find a dumb buyer maybe but you will struggle forever to sell and it will just lose more value.

A buyer who has a screen and keyboard and such will just buy a brand new Mac Mini or save some cash and buy a second hand one.

People who want a screen and keyboard will pick up an Air or MacBook Pro.

The value equation is simply not there for an Intel iMac.

I highly doubt you'll find an M-series iMac for R11k, anywhere close to R11k.

Double that up & try again.

And yes I am talking on Carb/Marketplace/Gum.

Was referring what to Dolby said, post #26

Though I'm convinced there is an angle here.

Let's wait and see.
What?

Do you think that maybe you have a huge issue? Like maybe you have sort of a mental issue?

I bought a 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch Intel i5 the other day for R1000.

8GB memory 256 GB SSD.

It’s nothing special but put it into perspective this machine is in perfect condition and the cheapest laptop you can buy brand new is a R4600 Asus Vivobook.

It has a lower spec CPU. Half the memory and granted a larger 15.6-inch screen but it’s 1080p and guaranteed the colour accuracy is ****.

Keyboard will be rubbish and the trackpad even worse and it’s all in a cheap as chips plastic body.

The MacBook is for my mom who is on a few years old piece of crap Lenovo and it will immediately be a monstrous upgrade.

The battery in its now presumably 7 years old state will still outlast both the new Asus mentioned above and the current Lenovo easily, but even if it does she’ll probably just run it as a desktop or I’ll just replace it myself.

About the only concern I have is the butterfly keyboard dying, but for a R1000 it’s a bargain.

Though I do think that’s exception .

It wasn’t long ago I was looking for looking for a Mac Mini to store files and you certainly couldn’t get at R1.000, even a 2012 4GB etc was more

Advertise it just above whatever istore will offer you for it and if it doesn’t sell in a reasonable time then you have a worst case scenario.
Yea - that was really the point of the thread.

If it’s R5k or R12k or R16k, then so be it. It’s been replaced already and just sitting there.

Minis hold their value a little better
