I see our lovely friends at cOre are going to sell it for R35k for an entry level:cry:

Wonder if they will release a display only.. **waits**

A 5K cinema display would require Displayport 1.3 to operate on a single cable. That's a good 12-24 months away - at the earliest.

thats just bladdy crazy... i would rather pay R8k for a samsung 4k UHD monitor and connect it to my rMBP

im speaking under correction here now.

apple 5k display is sRGB 100% and normal 4k's normally tend to be 98%

as well this is IPS panel. most 4k panels that I just found online is TN panels.

LG just released and IPS 31' inch display for $1499.

R9 290m is as well better than going to get out of a macbook...

However I am running a rMBP with a external display as I am typing this. I need mobility.

Just trying to explain why the crazy price tag.

The equivalent 5K panel from Dell costs the same as the retina iMac in the US. It's just damn expensive bleeding edge tech. Prices will improve, but it's going to take time.

But c0re could have made it R32k.

funny thing to think about, thats is the base model...

there is a `TB ssd 4ghz i7 version... price tag lets guess round R60K

Sucks to be in SA sometimes. If I was in the US I would have probably splurged by getting one of these machine. I've been waiting for retina for that long, but in SA with the exchange rate as it is and Core taking their cut these iMacs are just funny money.

5k is 2x the pixel count of 4k(!). 4k to 5k is like the jump from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440.

It's gonna be an astonishing screen! Nice to be living in these times.

couldnt agree more. so annoyed that iPhone so expensive. Newegg also just normal hardware. no wonder these people can get latest and greatest.

Would like one of these imac but i have an rmbp 13' and 1080P monitor. dont really need anything more. i can do with 2 more monitors though.

Plus you really need to bump up the specs to get a decent experience. 8gb isn't really going to push that resolution effectively. So you're talking another $5-1000 for an optimal 5k iMac. But that thing is so lush <3
