Plus you really need to bump up the specs to get a decent experience. 8gb isn't really going to push that resolution effectively. So you're talking another $5-1000 for an optimal 5k iMac. But that thing is so lush <3

agree so much, 16GB should be the minimum. i5 for any person using this will be too low. i7 please...

R9 290m is nice addition i think. wondering if they would do a crossfire version. would be good for them designers and render guys.

:) You can get the R9 M295X at the highest configuration. However IMO they should have gone with Nvidia as the 980m is much faster and cooler.

good to know, I think Apple went with AMD on GPU because as far as I remember they render faster? dont quote me on this.

The nVidia chips are superior, I also don't know why Apple didn't choose them. I've noticed Apple always alternates, between nVidia then AMD on updates to models, so maybe that is a strategy to keep them competitive, also to keep both their drivers up to date on the Mac platform.

I have just upgraded my iMac 21" to the iMac 5K. It is absolutely amazing.

After using the MacBook Retina and having to look at the "dodgy" 1080p screen it is an absolute pleasure to work on the 5k screen now. Very very happy with the purchase.

I'm not even slightly, remotely jealous of you right now. My fingernails aren't digging crescent shaped holes into my desk.

.... how much did it set you back then?

R35k :|

The bigger problem was trying to find stock. From what the guy at the iStore told me, most stores only got 1 machine, if they were lucky so took a little effort and then driving around to find it. A bit useless from Core's side to only supply stores with 1 or 2 machines.

I wouldn't call them useless.
It's a high-ticket item with very limited appeal due to the price. They can't really display them becaues that immediately lowers the value. Every second it sits on the shelf unsold is money that could have been used to buy high-sellers like iPhones.

All the stores had at least one on display. But no stock to actually sell. Reason I made the comment about been useless. Rather don't open the thing. People that want it will know about it and just want to go in and buy it. I would rather take the risk of not displaying it and keeping the stock sealed ready to sell. Like you said, expensive item. I would see much more value in rather selling that letting it stand there looking all pretty ;)
