Apple iPad reviewed

Love it or hate it Apple does come out with amazing products. I wouldn't call myself an Apple fan - all I own is an iPod classic and a BlackBerry fanatic. However, I'm on conference in Detroit at the moment and one of my European colleagues has just bought one. It looks bloody amazing from a synthetic and UI perspective. Can't comment on anything else. I am tempted to buy one for my wife cos I know she would love it. That would also mean I can get my hands on her laptop (a previous gift) cos I could sooo use it for more than browsing and checking mail!

Well, yes - you have a point there. See, I do not like to have something that associates me with snobs. Let me give you an example of things that will make you look like a self-righteous-holier-than-thou-tencho-dweeb

Well said. Interestig trend to me is the amount of apple users that also like blackberry. Seems these users have either a liking for things with fruity names or they enjoying having as little as possible control over their devices and what they are allowed to do with them. Still a strange combo since apple is known for beautiful UIs and blackberry is known for windows 3.11 UIs.

Huh? Has the author of this not even bothered to read up on their subject? You get 6 models, and 3 of them have 3g.
As a side note, you can get a Bluetooth keyboard, and use that. But it is true that for many things, a laptop would be better (I guess that’s why Apple hasn’t cancelled their MacBooks ;-p ). I for one though, read a lot on my iPhone, and while I could read the same content on my MacBook, it is a bit too cumbersome. Especially if you read in bed. As I will only use it at home, I do not care for the 3G, and as I already have a device for my music, (and will not be using it for movies) I only need the smallest and cheapest one. For my needs, I do not think it too pricy.
Fact of the matter is, it is a product designed for certain tasks, but not designed to replace a phone or a laptop. View it in that light, and it is a very cool devise. Whether you can afford it though, is a whole other story.

The thing I do not get, is why people bash products they do not have. I have an iPhone, and love it, but when my Father was purchasing a new phone, I steered him away from the iPhone. Why? Cause what he was looking for in a phone (take very good pictures, and phone), is not what I am looking for in a Phone (Store Music, read books, use the internet).
And yeah, I hear the answer already, “why would you care for this or that on a phone, rather get a (fill in technology name here)” Fact of the matter is, I am unique, and therefore have unique tastes, needs. Apple does it for me, but there are tons of people who would prefer the alternative. That’s cool, they have their right to want/need other functionality. When a person goes on this holier than though techno tirade about how great/useless a product is, without considering a) what the product is actually for and b) the alternatives, then whichever camp they are on, they come across as a know it all idiot (i.e. move to Myanmar, Belarus or Georgia {the country, not the state}, and there you will be happy to find no choice.)

Fact of the matter is, I am unique, and therefore have unique tastes, needs. Apple does it for me...
...and a million others who also believe they are unique and have special needs.

Look, we get it, its an image thing. Many of us know teens that are in high school so the whole everyone-has-that-label-to-be-cool mentality is not a strange concept at all. People don't bash apple products - they just don't want to be associated with the crowd.

No 3g (yet), no camera, tiny storage space - epic fail!

Really? The only real measure of a fail is the market place and its your prediction looks likely to be a fail.

The iPad - Its not a laptop, was never intended to be a laptop, never will be a laptop. Why would Apple do that and eat their own market? I was never expecting OSX on the iPad despite the fact that I would love it.

The trouble with most of these tech blogs is that the techie geeks (and I am one) on them often struggle to think beyond their own desires.
On this site in particular many people seem to think they represent the needs of all people. Well they don't. They represent a very small population of geeks that have very little influence in the market place.
Remember most computer users are pretty clueless when it comes to technology.
What does this large majority want?
* Switch it on and be running very quickly - Check
* Email - Check
* Web - Check
* Word processing and spreadsheets - Check via a $10 app
* And watch the App Space.
* They would like it cheap - Well no check there.

They will plug the camera gap in Generation 2, that news is already leaked. And version 4 of the OS is going to fix many of the weaknesses (multi tasking etc.)
There are some other gaps. Storage. Well there is a 64GB version but I suspect Generation 2 will have a 128GB version.

Many of the iPad critics are people that were anti Apple to begin with.
Its more expensive than PC technology and people seem to pay.
Apple-TV was a flop (well sort of). And every company has flops. I suspect the iPad will *not* be a flop.

Hmm, for someone who is so narrow minded, that they HATE a product, even though there is no one forcing them to buy one, you spend an awful lot of time on the product. You must really hate it. This obviously stems from some sort of trauma you have had to endure. So tell me, how’s your relationship with your mother?
And yeah, you are so Unique in your hatred for the device. Just like every other Apple basher. If you don’t like it, or need it, then don’t get it, and move on already.

Of course I won't get something that is inferior to my already cheap pc/nokia - its just that where apple folks get apple stickers to put on their cars us normal people get the chance to laugh and point at apple users who believe they have the best devices ever made.

Ok, I am with you on the whole sticker thing.

Lol iPhone is superior to 5800. Come on! Have you used one? Let me tell you: Typing is easier on an iPhone. The screen looks better. Web browsing is nicer on an iPhone.

Nope - what if I prefer to write instead of type?
Nope - the resolution is much lower.
Nope - iPhone does not have opera mobile nor flash.

Safari is a better browser than Opera. The screen does look better on an iPhone. Typing is much faster than writing!

5800 has such a poor selection of Apps and games, compared to the iPhone. Honestly there's no comparison!

Yes - it is better - on apple devices only. The screen looks better, because it shows less. You don't write enough it seems.

If you limit yourself to only getting apps from a "store" then sure - if you get "the internet" then you have way more to chose from.

Well where do you get apps for your Nokia? The Ovi Store. Which is a copy of the App store.

Anyway, I'm not gonna argue any further. We can each have our platform of preference.

How do you prove, just for interest sake, that you have more apps on a 5800. Everyone, even some of the most avid Apple haters concede that there are more apps on the iPhone.

And Opera is on the iphone. I have it, and boy, is it a lot better than on an S60. And here is a shocker, I have actually tried both, so I am not just opening my mouth and letting the wind blow my tongue around words.

You have Opera Mini - we have Opera Mobile - its is worlds apart.

Look guys - we can argue all we like - bottom line is the iPhone is easy to use and it has a nice UI. It does 95% of the things that most of the people out there want from a phone - so it is a success.

Technically however, it is inferior to other phones that are cheaper and more flexible.
