Agree ... my folks also prefer iOS over Android.

They don't need cutting edge at their age and don't care how 'behind' it actually is, it's good enough for them .

My stepfather loves taking jabs at my Android though, but he was happy that I could share photos that he couldn't get on his iPhone with him - and grateful that I could navigate him around the city.

Sorry - as in navigate the city (not the phone)

So we'd wake up fairly early and make our way through to some old churches and buildings around the city

His first issue was that the iPhone couldn't get back far enough to get the entire building ... there's no wide angle like on the Androids. Incidentally, this is the focal length I use most when traveling - it really does rock!
His second issue was that inside some of the churches, it was quite dark ... he couldn't get anything that was usable as they only just launched low light now.

I think people underestimate the lack of flexibility that the iPhone cameras have had (until now) - a 16mm / 28mm / 80mm / macro / night or low light photography in one phone is magic. Even the hybrid or digital zooms really aren't that bad.

When it got the 19:00 with full GPS and lots of screen time trying to find our way around the cities, his XS Max was starting to run low on juice .... so I ended up taking over, as my battery lasted longer. On the occasion we went back to the hotel to freshen up, I'd be able to get battery in that time to go on until the next morning .... whereas he'd manage to get a few more hours in the same time.

So while he prefers iOS in general (he's retired - always able to charge and doesn't need photos), when he's travelling he'd much prefer something like what I have. It sounds the iPhone 11 has closed both those gaps though

I simply can’t comprehend this, and it reeks of artistic license and overplaying the supposed issues

It’s not THAT dark inside those churches.

I only have an XR and have never taken an “unusable” photo in anything other than brutal and complete darkness.

And even then last night I took photos at my kids ballet concert at full digital zoom in complete darkness other than stage lights and for what it was it was still fine. Not going to print them sure, but they captured the moment just fine.

You make it literally sound like it’s a Nokia 3310 versus a modern phone, meanwhile we are talking about maybe a 5% real world difference.

This is the dark church ... I can promise you the iPhone XS image was more than 5%.

I think that 'quality' of photography is subjective and you may prefer your 'standard' shots - but ask anyone that has used low light on the Huaweis/Samsungs and the iPhone if they feel there's a marginal difference ...

I think when you see how much flexibility the extra lens and modes have, you'll realize they weren't overplayed. There's nothing wrong with the iPhone 1x and 2x - but being able to go lower and higher is a huge thing. Possibly, that's why Tim Cook decided to add these to the iPhone 11 ?

This church is 300m+ away and on a sub 9mm phone, the images are pretty good in full screen. I think an iPhone may be able to get two of the below blocks ...

EDIT : I've just taken the off Facebook ... iPhone 7. The 8 is slightly better and the XS much better - but whew, not even comparable when it comes to light / detail / focal length. I'm really unsure where you get the 5% from ...

And which one of those is “unusable” exactly?

And which one looks the most like the actual place you were in at the time? Unfortunately nobody would know that wasn’t there at that time.

The 5% was obviously pulled out of thin air, my point stands that nothing taken is “unusable” as you’ve claimed.

And I’m willing to bet the iPhones are probably still more colour accurate even if darker, because every Huawei image I’ve seen looks near artificial the colour is so overblown.

The quality doesn’t need to be subjective when it comes to colour accuracy, that’s actually quite measurable.

I’m willing to bet the actual image with the naked eye at the moment of the shot wasn’t near as rich and overblown in colour as the above.

That’s what quality is to me. I don’t want photos that look pretty in isolation for looking photoshop fake straight off the camera because they are over vivid and fake HDR’d etc. Which is what the above looks like to me.

I want photos that look nearest to what it looked like in the moment on the day when I took the photos.

I wasn’t talking about the lens.

That obviously can’t be altered without the hardware.

It’s quite obvious why they’ve been added to the next generation.

But I’ll illustrate yet again to you that inside iPhone land nobody cares about Huawei or any other manufacturer. They don’t exist.

I tried to buy an iPhone 11 in Dubai airport last night, all sold out at R12,192 for a 128gb model. That’s duty free of course, but the standard on the street price in Dubai of R12,800 against R16,999 here is massive difference.

And it never stops being amusing that the Android requires double the memory to be “ahead”.
 
I'm very impressed - well done!

Beforehand no iPhone user ever cared about things like battery life or camera because - well - iPhone were never up there with the rest. But I think that with this generation, every single iPhone user is going to care because at last they're running with the big boys
