Apple iPhone 5 unveiled

Yea it never will, you're totally right. Look frankly there's nothing in the iPhone5 that isn't already somewhere else to some degree. There's certainly nothing as revelatory as the first capacitive touchscreen UI or the retina display; and some promising technology like - well basically NFC - have been missed altogether. I don't even think there is such a technology at present that could be introduced into a phone that would blow people away anymore. It's about refinement and improvement of the existing experience. That's what I was expecting. It would have been nice to see that one killer nobody-has-ever-dreamed-of-before feature but I didn't really believe it would be there.

What I did see was something that is leagues ahead of anything else in build quality, that appears to have the best quality screen anywhere, that's noticeably a huge amount faster than current gen phones, and that integrates the whole thing into an overall experience that can't really be touched anywhere else. If that package is disappointing I don't know what else in smartphones will ever excite people again.

Out of curiosity, why do you say NFC is "promising technology"? Its been around in current form for 8 years, and has failed to gain traction. Bluetooth 4.0 seems to be set (And widely adopted) to achieve the solution to the "problem" that NFC is trying to solve

Fully agreed. I actually had the same viewpoint when the S3 was launched. I still have not found anything that the S3 can do that the S2 cannot.

Partially agree here. On the build quality and overall experience- agreed. But Android OEM's are catching up- look at the Nexus 7.

On the "best" features mentioned above- no, not yet. Real world experience is crucial here.

And then on top of that when I thought they were done with the presentation after the iPhone, they just kept rolling out new features. Not small ones either - a series of knockouts. New iTouch is going to dominate, new iPod, new iTunes (and new iOS ITunes), new earphones. If you can look at that whole lineup and then think that they stopped innovating... well anyway I guess some people can but to me they're still on top of their game as ever.

I actually forgot to mention the revamp of iTunes. I am still wary of it as a product... But the other products aside from the iPhone were equally impressive (in an understated way). And perhaps this is what Apple are moving towards- fast followers of quality products. Makes R&D so much easier for them :)

Does the new iPhone have all those other handy little features of the S3 like screen off when no one's looking at it?

My point is simple - the world expected Apple to produce something revolutionary, as they like to tout the word "revolutionary" and "innovation". What did they deliver? Bollocks. They waste their time on a stupid sim thing instead of actual better features for the phone. When Samsung eventually gets the nano-sim, I won't say anything. Why? Because Samsung make real phones with awesome features.

Yeah, I'll get an S3 because it has "S Beam" and "Buddy Share" and the iPhone 5 doesn't!

Desserts taken of the kids menu, what's next coco the clown?
And no not a sheep. Just a solid phone that just works

The name of each iteration of Android starts with the next letter of the alphabet.

wikipedia:
Each version after "Astro" and "Bender" is named in alphabetical order after a dessert or sugary treat, with 1.5 "Cupcake" being the first and every update since following this naming convention.[35]

So I'm really sorry to have to be the one to inform you, but nope, no, no Coco The Clown, as we're way past "C" and "C" was Cupcake. Try not to cry yourself to sleep over this.

Not really, the rumour mill pretty much predicted exactly what this iPhone 5 would bring to the table, from LTE, to 4" 16:9 aspect ratio to smaller dock, to its 7.6mm form factor, to the 2 tone aluminium finish, to the A6 cpu. Hell, even iOS6 has been out as a beta for the last couple of months for developers to play with so pretty much no surprises there either. iPhone 5 has been the worlds worst kept secret!!! Not sure why everyone is acting so surprised.

As for the new dock and new nano sim surely when you knocking the size of your product down from 9.3mm to 7.6mm these things matter?? From 130g to 112g??? These things matter. To you and me it may be bollocks but the impact on the overall package is huge!! Throw LTE in the mix, a bigger capacity battery, a bigger screen, extra microphones for noise cancellation and voice recognition, 1gb of ram and suddenly they done a good job.

Now. Where are those pictures of the fake Chinese Iphone again? They guys that are suing Apple. Does the final Iphone5 look similar to their fake version?

The Aston Martin Cygnet is actually based on the Toyota iQ.

So Aston Martin gets Toyota to make their parts?

$200... naturally not close to what it will be like equivalent when it hits here.... eventually

Strange obsession they have with going thinner and lighter.... i would've prefered keep the same/similar thickness and weight as 4s and increase battery capacity... extra hour or 2 battery life will mean more than a few mm or grams saved

They've increased standby time by 25 hours (will have to verify the accuracy in real world comparison though) vs the 4s and that with LTE, a larger screen, more powerful CPU, more ram etc etc etc

Does passbook not achieve the same end result as NFC???

I'm no Apple fanboi, but I don't understand why seemingly everyone expected something mindblowing out of the iPhone 5, whilst overlooking the significant improvements to devices that Apple actually are unchallenged in (the portable media player)? I think that iPhone owners would mostly agree that the improvements are significant enough, and that the ecosystem and experience remains as well executed as it is. Even Google is taking this approach- the Nexus 7 was lauded when it was launched but nothing about it was new except for the updated OS (which in itself was not highly innovative).

The new iPod touch has better headphones, a far better design and hardware platform, improved functionality and the disaster that is iTunes has been revamped. There is literally nothing quite like it on the market barring a Google Nexus 7, which isn't even in the same bracket. This to me was the most impressive portion of the keynote, and Apple played their hand well.

Bottom line: the smart phone market has matured. The lead has been lost and the race is now almost even. The quality of the ice cream is the same now ... so it's now about flavour.

Apple will now have to focus on something different to do what they have done in the past with the iPod, iPhone and iPad when it disrupted industries. iPhone is now just another top league smartphone choice. Apple needs a new iSomething that will make people go "Wow!".

they could have innovated and done it themselves instead of waiting, the payment thing is still finding its feet but would get a huge boost if you could use your iphone in starbucks etc, samsung already showed its use in SBeam sharing, why doesn't Apple make their own version, put NFC chips in Ipads, Ipods, Iphones, Mac's etc for syncing devices over wifi and streaming. Instead of fiddling with passwords and wifi, one swipe and its done and connected. That's how you wow at a keynote.

But.... passbook does just that and it was featured extensively at this keynote address and using your exact example of purchasing from starbucks!!!

Whatever makes you sleep, buddy.

Do they though? I don't think so.

I couldn't agree...less. The market has matured but I do not see the same level of quality across the board. I'm fairly confident (but obviously can be very wrong) that they'll still end up having the same level of dominance as the 4S. It's such a marketable device, new this's and that's notwithstanding.

Again, I just don't agree. Making people go 'wow' is not equal to making lots and lots of money. What they've done clearly is double down on profit-making services within the iPhone and iPad themselves. I don't even think they've begun to really maximise the potential for in-device profitability.
