Apple iPhone 5 unveiled

Cerebus, first you totally agree with me and then you turn around and totally disagree. It's as if there is a chip in your brain that keeps on setting you to a pro-Apple default position all the time. At times you write more balanced post but the chip in the end always wins (back to default). It's therefore not fair to give Merc such a hard time as if you are not guilty yourself.

Merc's contribution in this thread has been unbalanced and frankly useless. He has done nothing but sneer and accuse anybody who actually likes the new iPhone look. You've been far more balanced. I can disagree with you without getting juvenilia shoved back at me.

Not so clear cut in the corporate world where MS Exchange Server is the norm. How does the stock Samsung mail app work with Exchange? iOS's mail app is a darn good replication of Outlook's full functionality on a phone.

Works like a charm. I think the Samsung stock calander app is even on parr with outlook.

It's something most other phone manufacturers still haven't really figured out - what the tech adopters want and what the massmarket wants are not the same thing at all, or even close. People want something beautiful. Tech guys harp on this and that, but it's irrelevant if the final product doesn't feel like the best thing you've ever held.

I have always seen this as the most important idea that Apple wants to convey with their products.

You know, ok my feeling on Jelly Bean is this: yes it's far slicker than it used to be, but that's because it was coming off a very low base standard. In the words of Jesus: "I am an unprofitable servant; I have only done what I ought to do." It's still, to my eyes, a very timidly designed OS, lacking the bold graphical flourishes that iOS has in abundance. Compare the animations of combining icons into folders for instance - in iOS the whole screen morphs to accommodate the new view. In JB you get a measly circle around the icon. Or the notifications - ok Android did it first and Apple copied, but look at e.g. the stock ticker - the whole thing is so much classier.

That is a very apt view, one I actually agree with and if memory serves, the Android developers have said something similar before. But I don't think that JB is that far behind- fair enough that the folder creation does not involve the entire screen, but the widgets on screen do resize to accomodate. And JB does offer a larger ability to customise- so while not as classy by default, it is considerably more personal. Something that I feel iOS lacks as an OS. I can't do this on iOS (similar to current current setup, stupid browser is not allowing me to post my screenshot):

You don't think so? Lol the iPhone makes them buckle at the knees.

No, I don't think so. I think that they will work at polishing their products, but I don't see them trying to outdo the iPhone 5.

Thanks. Quite frankly, he can say what he likes and call me whatever he likes. He is only making us realise who the real "unbalanced" person is. He is so pro-Apple, that it has become a joke. He appears very intelligent but when it comes to Apple, it's hard to take him seriously. Actually sad how people can become like that :(

Oh quit yer bellayching. You can give but you can't get it back?

I will summarise my position as follows :

Yes, it's a nice phone, but if one landed in my lap I would give it away. Someone will want it.

There are better phones out there and I am quite happy with the one that I have (Sony Xperia S - has better screen than iPhone 5, as well as NFC).

Any new phone that I get will have to have a 64GB SDXC slot. That also works on some of the older phones.

Yeah, and to my view they succeeded in spades.

VERY NICE!! I like a lot. That is super classy.

It's still the T-Rex on the lawn.

So many 'apple' haters here. Do yourselfs a favour and go read stevies autobiography to get a better glimpse of apple's mindset.
Apple is not only about innovation, its also about business - so they dont really design stuff for geeks (which is most of this community :D ) they design stuff to transform the lives of average joe. they have achieved that already with the iphone 3 and are now just coining it. And this phone is just that, a placeholder, a defensive strategy, until they are ready to unleash their next skunk works project (the next apple2, the next Mac, the next ipad).

funny extract from his book…while he was still living at his parents home and building the first apple computer in the garage, he didn’t want to eat properly and would make weird pronouncements like…“ I’m a fruitarian and will only eat leaves picked by virgins in the moonlight ” :D

Haters gonna hate.

That said, all the hype prior to launch and what essentially emerged is comparable to an an audiophile-class boot-box sized CD player.

The new iPhone would have been fantastic except for the bigger size.

+1. And I think that this is where Windows 8 are looking to come in- to serve you across all platforms with a singular modus operandi.

Yes, MS is going for exactly what I'm after ... and it may well sway me in that direction. I just first want to see the app development curve before I jump. It is about integration of "everything". Why I've said before that Samsung is on a good path, but not the same as MS in this case. That's also why I made the statement one day that we should actually stop talking about "phones" because voice/phoning is not what these devices are about any more.

... wonder if hell has iTunes and an App Store already ... the iCooler device must be a top seller ... LOL!
