Apple iTunes MASSIVE FAIL

I'm just going on what he's saying - I try use it as little as possible, so I've never tried myself

It's pretty straightforward in iTunes. It's on the iDevices directly that it's more problematic. But in any case the app in question is free, and pretty awesome at that.

I cancel downloads in iTunes all the time. Not sure what you're on about.
The Apple version works differently.

Just so everyone knows, iTunes was bought out by Apple. They didn't design it.

Sound Jam was created by two ex-apple employees who, after selling it to Apple (who then renamed it "iTunes") returned to work there.

Quite a bit of functionality was added by the team after their return.

I think that one of the reasons that people get so het up about this issue is because bandwidth is so expensive here - must confess that uncapped has been a huge stress saver for me in that respect - I had a similar thing that I wanted to cancel and eventually realised I just have to let it complete then delete - since I'm on uncapped I could just shrug.

So yes, iTunes should allow one to cancel the download, I can however see why, in the context of cheap bandwidth in the US and the UK, that the change would be low down on the iTunes dev team priority list.

I am very tempted to show the middle finger to APPLE and it's software developers

How the hell can the iSHEEP crowd tolerate this behaviour.

I clicked on a free book download in the Bookstore - Beatles Yellow Submarine
When I realized it wants to download about 300 meg ( 300 meg for an EPUB book ? WTF ! ) I tried to stop it

Fat chance - it cannot be done, you can pause it, but always come back
The download must finish before you can delete it

OR - GET THIS

"You have to contact iTunes support to get them to turn the download off"

Forget about pirating and spam mail - I think APPLE with all their users must be the biggest bandwidth waster on the NET

The bit about not easily being able to stop the download and deleting it - that is totally illogical and unacceptable if true.

If that is true, it's completely retarded.

It is true and it's simple to reason why?

Apple chose to build a solution that would assure a download of a purchase (paid or free), rather than deal with countless complaints when / if a download failed.

As I said it is now obsolete functionality given that with iCloud you can re-download any prior purchases. Why it hasn't been removed is anyone's guess.

But it's only logical to have an option cancel the download. Apple could have built in a proper way to cancel the download, like a failsafe, in case it was accidentally selected, kind of like what they do with the iTunes agreement.

In the US that type of functionality could still land them with a class-action lawsuit -- no one would file a class-action lawsuit for not being able to stop a download.

Time will tell. In the US, people sue for anything all the time :p

I think we can all agree the iTunes store can do with some significant improvement or complete replacement -- much of the underlying technology was built during a time when DRM was prevalent and reliable internet services were still in their infancy.

iTunes needs a lot of work as there are many things that can be simplified and streamlined. As far as canceling downloads go I'm sure I've done it in the past.

You all may find the iCloud solution stupid but I find it quite awesome that apps which will work on my iPhone, iPad and iPod get synced automatically with all my devices after a single purchase.

Just one noob question, how does one "accidentally" click the download button?

Apple bought it back in 2000. You don't think Apple worked on it since then? I think this Apple defence is a fail.

hmm...not a fan of itunes but i've canceled plenty of stuff in itunes

also remember that for the rest of the world this is not a problem, it's only for the 0.01% minority of the world who live in south africa who have crappy vodacom connections.
if you have a proper internet connection like the rest of the world, or use mweb, you wouldn't mind at all.

(You would be enjoying that book by now as a matter of fact, instead of needing to pay R600 for it if you were out of bundle)

lol if you don't like apple dude, don't buy their products..... simple as that really

Go buy a sagem, nokia, errecsion, LG, samsang, motarola or one of those weird blackberry things - any of those brands will be good for you, as none of them have iTunes or any of their Apps or bookstores..

it's really not Apple's fault that we live in a country with dried up internetz - blame our Department of Communications and their Telkom monopoly.

I like their products ... but they can be so much better, more user friendly and in all honesty, could probably be the best tablet available.

They just have some really stupid ideas sometimes - and they're all business decisions. Someone sat down and though, 'I do not want them to do X'

well unfortunately no product is perfect. i've never had trouble pausing/stopping a download, but i still hate itunes for other reasons:
- slows down with over 1000 apps installed.
- RSA not allowed that many apps/games
- dragging a single mp3 album folder to itunes, causes it to split it up into different tracks (it doesnt know 1 folder = 1 album)

having said that, it's still better than the alternatives.

Plus I fix the above problems anyway, and then it's all gravy.
- iTunes IPA Sorter
- getting a US account
- using a mp3 tagger to properly sort out my music first

if you don't have bandwidth to waste, check filesizes before downloading something. Don't blame apple because you need to do this, blame your ISP (or get another)

I don't use it t download - so that's also never bugged me.

But my list of gripes are :

* give three separate libraries (music, movies, photos) because not everyone has a Mac and uses iPhoto to manage photos
* compilations don't work properly - you have to sit and tag them yourself as compilations. Those tags don't stay, so next time you import the library, you will spend more hours tagging ..,.
* Sync! Sync! Sync! I wish it would mirror the folders ... If I delete from the folder, remove it automatically from the library. An, not everyone has a Mac and we still prefer a file explorer/structure
* often it doesn't import everything. I have 32,000 songs and I notice it'll import 31,600 before stopping. On re-importing, it'll go to 32,000
* why not make it DLNA so we can have ONE library on our PC?
* allow multitask! When importing and the window pops up, thats it - you can't do anything. We are in 2012 now ....

I wish they'd create an iTunes II from scratch and that can be a real hub of entertainment
