Apple Maps app drops Google

Damn - and I just went and bought TomTom last week for an excursion into the depths of New Brighton. :o

I don't think it will be wasted money. The Maps app will probably require 3G, while the TomTom app won't. So you will save on roaming charges

no love lost between google and apple.
would be interesting to hear a response from google.
i'm pretty disappointed with their g+ app on ios.
i really hope their forward strategy isn't to provide crippled services on other platforms to entice users to full services on android. that's just a bad idea imo.

A good move if you ask me. Turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, Siri support, beautiful 3D maps and some viable competition to Google's domination. It can only be good for the consumer.

I really hope that their local business listings work in SA!

Good point that I didn't consider. Thanks. :)

Personally I'm glad Apple is bringing Turn by turn to their devices. I'm not sure why so many people think they should have relied on Google for it though.

I wonder if they will add the same level of support like Google maps Editor ie: http://www.google.com/mapmaker

Knowing Apple it will most likely be closed system.

yeah, i'm a bit confused. are they using tomtom as the map provider here, or are they going to do their own thing?
i can't imagine they would use openstreetmap for their main map app and nav.
i've done a bit of editing in mapmaker. approvals are slow and the ui is a bit irritating. from a noob pov that is.

Its not so much "should of" as a "I would love all 3 big OS's to use the same". be it Bing, Google, Open street maps or something totally else. My big reason fro this is Traffic. If all use the same mapping service it would have been easier to get a proper picture of how traffic is on a certain route. But thats a dream I know will never come true.

As for own mapping service Google can only blame themselve for not updating the Google map app for iOS to provide Voice navigation ans seeing that Windows Phone + Symbian Sport Nokia Drive, Android Google maps voice it was a given that Apple had to do something to level the playing field.

I wonder if there will be live traffic info for the maps in SA? This could be quite awesome. TomTom has live traffic info for the app, but requires a monthly pr yearly subscription.

Traffic? It's PE - there isnt any! Rush hour is predictable and it only lasts about 20 minutes. :D

But I see your point. :)

The photos looks a bit Google Maps 0.1 Beta from about 2 years back

I don't see why so many pessimistic posts. If you don't like the Apple maps, then it's very simple - don't upgrade to iOS6 in October...stay with iOS5, and you will have google maps.

However, I have no doubt that Apple maps, will equal or better Google maps before long - just wait and see. It is not even out yet and people are bashing it. For a start it will have voice nav with Siri, and turn by turn navigation...which it doesn't have with the current Google maps.

At the very least....the competition between Apple and Google will benefit us. It will force them to rush new features etc etc. Relax, be happy

They use TomTom and crowd sourcing for Traffic Data

Isn't Google Maps still available through the Google website? Just won't be an app.

I think its because Google Maps is much more than just Voice navigation, but I guess seeing that iOS users dont have the full experience it will not make a real difference anyway.

I would have preferred the full experience to just another voice navigation while driving.

Being able to map hiking add your own business and more also have internal floor plans go so much deeper than just take me to street x in city y. Trust me my Android saved me getting lost more than once in Hong Kong & Munich subways.

Even without that, you can still install Google Earth.

Google should just add voice nav into the app & give a layer that is similar to Google maps :)

Not true. Android was bought by Google in 2005 already. iPhone only came out in 2007. But who cares anyways, the competition is good for us.

I agree, who cares but

Your logic is faulty

he Pre-iOS Android looks nothing like iOS.
After 2007 Android started looking like iOS

That is pretty factual.
But I agree who cares
