Sounds to me you're turning a bit green if this is your best excuse. I'd sure rather enjoy the luxury and ease of driving in a luxury german car than spluttering along in something that's about to give up the ghost but hey I've got an orange on the aerial!!!!

It's about style and class and either you have or you don't. Those that don't only wish they did and try to compensate.:p

um, you do know that I drive a Mercedes, don't you? :D

What happens if you own a PC for gaming and a Mac for work?

Does that make you super rich?...:D

Whether you drive a Merc or not is immaterial, the computer you use is way inferior!

haha... you have no idea what kind of computer/s I use. And for you to make that judgment call with no knowledge just make you look like a presumptuous fool. ;) Just like you did with the car.

That's sooo nasty... :p

Surely one cannot buy style or class...

A day on the golf course teaches one that. The old money look with disdain on the new money...

Having a billion or two is never enough...If your grandchildren inherit 50 billion or so, and continue running the successful "family businesses", they and their offspring may be accepted as having style and class.

Advertising works well at selling the dream.

I recently invested R42k in a family member's business...so that a macbook can be bought...

I get R1750 per month forever. It is secured with insurance. It transfers to my daughter one day.

A depreciating macbook versus an investment with better returns, than any bank in SA can give for the same amount in fixed deposit.

Advertising works well at selling the dream...

Did you see i quoted his post? if you go read the amount of products that failed because of pricing you will see what i mean by failing.

Apple is not failing at all but some of those products failed epically :D.

Which Apple products are failing?

Like the Zune?
MS Origami (do you even know what that is)?
Windows Mobile?
Windows Vista?
Windows Vista/2003 vs Linux in the server market?
XBOX?
XBOX360?
MS PlayForSure?
MS Bob?
Windows Me?

I think the last Apple product not to make huge profits was the Apple Newton which was ahead of its time.

OT:

what investment is that if you dont mind me asking ... because i could continually loan money and investment that money getting a higher return then the loan repayment im paying ... mmm ... and just keep on doing that ... ill net higher every month ... and be able to loan bigger amounts ... sounds like a scheme :)

If that's what God gave me so be it. It gets me from point A to point B. Why buy something that is over-priced, guzzles gas and is a target for hi-jackers?

Ohhhh, wait... cos it has a fancy logo on it. Isn't that what I said in the first place?

Gary you don't understand.

Macs are not about looking pretty. They are just better.

A Macbook can be had new for R12,500. A similarly spec'ed Sony Vaio or Lenovo will cost you at least that much and you only get Windows. I bet you the display will be lower res too.

Sure one does not need higher display res, and longer battery life, and a stable virus free operating system which does not bother you with useless rubbish like Windows, nor won't install keyloggers to send your banking details to China/Russia by plugging in a USB stick or downloading email, but those things are worth it. A higher res allows you to have more windows running and lets you work easier - more productively.

Similarly spec'ed Windows and Mac machines cost similar prices.
Please get this, APPLE just doesn't make sub R12K notebooks. A R12K Windows notebook is a heavy, low resolution, low battery life, Intel GMA usually equipped piece of misery. And you won't be able to play games on it either.

This will stir things up..... help me MAC users

Do you agree/disagree with the points here? Tell me why -- but make sure your points are solidly argued, and make sure you read the whole article before flaming me. There's an important bit right at the very bottom.

1. Reliable sleep mode
2. Extremely fast boot times
3. Apple uses good quality parts.
4. Less blinking lights.
5. OS X + Windows is better than just Windows
6. Easier to troubleshoot Macs.
7. A culture of good quality community software
8. More useful apps out of the box
9. Neat and contained system settings.
10. Apple doesn't load the system up with crap.

http://apcmag.com/15_reasons_macs_are_still_better_than_windows.htm

With an Intel SSD, my Mac Pro boots up in less than 10 sec on Leopard.
It will probably be faster on Snow Leopard.

How long does Vista take to booooooot up?

With or without an SSD peter?

With the SSD it boots up in 10 sec, but some of that is other harddrives unparking.

Other than loading the OS and shutting down faster, the SSD is not a speed boost to performance. Final Cut Studio 2 still loads its plugins with almost the same speed from the Intel X25M Gen2 160GB SSD.

I actually regret paying the R4000 odd bucks for it.

Hehe! It's not a scheme. It's a family member, whom I know I can trust to deliver.

It is an investment in a non specific client base. I had an attorney meet with everyone and then finalised the paperwork in two more emails. It cost R600 for that, which they paid.

The contract simply ensures that there is a default clause and insurance.

They have a great setup and solid income, but needed a macbook, without having enough to get one outright, after overheads.

The amount they pay me is easily covered. They get the macbook, I get money forever. Even with inflation, I beat the same investment in a bank.

Gary you don't understand.

Macs are not about looking pretty. They are just better.

I'm sure some of them are better than some PCs, but I'm sure that some PCs are also better than some macs. I'm quite happy with my Windows 7 computer. :D And it does exactly what I want it to do.

I'm sure it does, and I use both and I'm happy with XP over Vista/7. However, Macs do have specific benefits which outweight the cost fact that you can't buy a sub-R12K Apple Mac new.

In fact I'm happy with Leopard. Won't be going Snow Leopard (despite the R300 price tag) for a very long time.

Also Gary you're a clued up guy. You won't get hacked or infested with viruses and keyloggers. However, many people such as older people and those with less PC experience will. Macs are safer, and less likely to fall prey to viruses - the only way to get a virus on a Mac is to download the Warez trojan, not from email, not from USB sticks, etc.

I'll buy one when they go below R4000 for a complete system :p

Haha, so where can I get a R4000 Windows system - wait Vista Ultimate costs R4700. I know you like to pirate ;) but seriously, look at the prices.

Peter i cannot believe you that your stuff is not running faster :D, obviously if final cut has been opened and you open it again without booting it will be fast.

So you are telling me if you fresh boot your pc that your old hdd loaded as fast as the ssd?

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/02/11/macbook_air_face_off_hdd_vs_ssd_with_video.html

there is a video there that show a ssd mac opening 17 programs 5 times faster than the normal drive.

Guess you got a bad intel SSD you should take it back and ask for a refund :D.

PS peter old folk who have no idea how to protect their windows more than likely could not use a mac dude :D. So your logic is kinda flawed :D

Stuff is not running much faster. Maybe because I have 7GB of RAM.

It loads faster but not significantly faster. Maybe 10-20% faster but no more.

Apple Fanbois.

Yes Adobe Photoshop loads a bit faster but the drive is only 160GB. If Intel released a 500GB one and I could put my scratch files on that, wow - things would run faster but a 500GB SSD would cost a lot (R20,000 or more).
Guess you got a bad intel SSD you should take it back and ask for a refund :D.

It benchmarks fine in Drive Genius. Maybe because I have 7GB of RAM things just start fast anyway.

Macs are easier to use than Windows machines because they don't force you to learn jargon - and Mac OS hassles you less. It's easier. I have family members who have mastered the Mac while they had hassles with Windows.
