That they do, I just do not believe that an OS that took 2003-2007 to write will change UI's in just 11 months just because someone else did it and it looked cool. Something tells me it was there from the start, Esp when you look at the actual source code of Android. Pity we will never have access to iOS source to finally put this argument at rest.

If Apple openly discussed iPhone development in front of Google while the world knew they where working on their own counterpart, they must have idiots working for them. I think not, as Apple is bloody good at keeping secrets, hell just look at how good they are at keeping new releases from the public

Google bought Android, but Eric Schmidt, as a member of the Apple Board didn't disclose to them that Google intended developing Android into its own OS that would compete directly with the OS that Apple was developing. Steve Jobs considered himself a mentor to Larry Paige and Sergey Brin, and counted Eric Schmidt amongst his friends. When Google launched the G1 Steve Jobs felt betrayed.

Apple went after Samsung because they are the largest and most successful of the Android manufacturers, and they had used the success of the iPhone to benefit their own mobile business by blatantly copying both the look of the hardware, and many aspects of the UI.

Not because somebody else did it and it looked cool... because billions of dollars of revenues were at stake. And because copying is faster than creating. But credit where credit is due, at least Google recognised the future when they saw it, unlike Microsoft, Nokia, RIM, et al.

WOW, must have been a HUGE surprise then? I think not, as they kept him after that release and also on resignation said:

“Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.”

So my article was nicely ignored?

As it turns out, my memory isn't playing tricks on me. We're talking November 12 2007, and Google released the fist SDK for Android. Other than the keyboard-driven BlackBerry-esque style, the SDK also supported touch screens just fine. And, just as I remembered, Google showed off a reference design with a full touch screen (and, by the looks of it, it's capacitive) - looking suspiciously similar to the HTC Dream, the first Android device - including gestures and flicks.

I don't think that it is hard at all, he certainly performs most of the gestures that Apple have patented, eg pinch-to-zoom.

But he wasn't the first, a lot of the stuff was around before that.

Ugh now I gotta find my original article to figure out when they they were first presented with the original concepts of multitouch gestures. Could be earlier than this, could be later, I'm not sure. 4-5 years of R&D went into the iPhone, but it was originally scroll wheel shape like the iPod. Then when they saw multitouch tech demo, it blew them away. I imagine it was similar to the moment when Jobs first saw the Xerox GUI demo.

I seem to recall a pinch-to-zoom demo by Mitsubishi from 2001 - this was demonstrated to Apple at the time.

Apple may have fine-tuned certain things, but they didn't invent any of the major components of the touch-screen as we know it today.

Haha, that's a Press Release. What do you think they'd say? After Google launched Android, Eric Schmidt was asked to recuse himself from Board Meetings whenever iPhone matters were being discussed, but the trust between Eric and Steve Jobs was gone forever.

Well how do you explain the timelapse then?

1 month after release of Android, I can understand and agree with you that they are upset and its just a press release, keeping him on for almost 2 years and only resign after Chrome OS release?

Come on people, you making it out as if Apple have idiots working for them.

Think about it, will you keep someone employed with full access for 2 years of you think he is stealing your trade secrets for a competing company?
 
It is pointless quibling about the past as all we have is speculation and selective information released to the media. This topic has been tossed around for what feels like an eternity with no clear winner. The courtcase will only be resolved or tossed out long after the supposed infringing devices are not relevant anymore.

So the only question now is which horse to bet on ? a one trick pony or a Clydesdale with awsome stuff in the cart.:)

Good faith on the part of Apple perhaps? The relative immaturity and financial non-viability of Android? It could be that their relationship still wasn't so bad, just increasingly tense as it was becoming clear that Google was pushing into Apple's space. It's quite speculative.

Ahhh yes, there is that to also consider. I just wish we had the iphone5 and WP8 out already to draw accurate conclusions.

Happy to look at it, after all, my 2003 PocketPC 4.2 PDA is a better device than my iPod Touch 4th Gen.

Anybody care to lend me a WP8 phone ? Please ? I just want to play with it ? Nokia ?
