Apple taking on the world

What a joke Apple has become ..

In what way are Apple a joke? Unless becoming the most valuable listed company in the world is somehow a joke. The ecosystem they have built is the envy of the entire tech industry, which is why everyone from Microsoft to Google to Samsung are trying to emulate them.

Retina (higher pixel density) on a laptop = evolution to me, not innovation. Innovation would be the new transparent screen from Samsung or the flexible screen from Nokia (I think). Innovation should include a new way of doing things, not just a higher qaulity screen showing pictures better.

I have no problem admitting and admiring Apple's great innovations and the beauty and quality of their products. That has never been my issue in my posts. I am tagged as an Apple hater because I question Apple's current litigation strategy and the bullying it implies. I have a problem with the negative/aggressive route it has embarked on. For me it is not about the products or the innovation but the type of company Apple seems to want to be now. They have been bullied so they will now bully. My view is that they should be better than that and be innovative in the culture/image they portray and the way they deal with opposition/competition. That is why I've pointed to the Shatterpruffe ad so many times. My message would be "We feel honoured that our products are being copied, but the copies just aren't the same thing. Get the real thing.".

In what universe are transparent and flexible displays not 'just' higher quality screens showing pictures better? Retina quality is superior to either of those in the sense that it's proven to be marketable and make an actual difference to the user experience. I mucked about with the retina MacBook the other day and it is a generational (as opposed to incremental, which is what you should mean by evolutionary - radical steps forward vs small and obvious improvements) leap, and it forces not only other manufacturers to up their game but also the web itself which is quite unprepared for very high density displays.

Now perhaps an example of innovation would be Microsoft recently - look at kinect, surface, metro. But in fact all of those ideas are just advancements of already existing ideas - wiimote, iPad, mobile ui's... So I guess one has to draw a line somewhere.

I think that the current lawsuits probably date back to Steve Jobs, who felt that he had been betrayed by Eric Schmidt and Google, and Tim Cook is just carrying out Steve's wishes to go "thermonuclear" on Android. However, Tim Cook meeting with Larry Paige this week is hopefully a sign that they will come to some agreement.

I hope so too. It will send out the right message. We need to see a "softer" side from Apple.

I was a fan of Steve Jobs ... until I read his Biography.

Examples: The Retina screen, the App Store, camera quality, battery life, and most important to me; the ability to ship the latest OS version simultaneously, worldwide, on the same day.

Just to name a few that made me choose an iPhone over anything else available at the time. And the iPhone was no more expensive on contract than the top Samsung, HTC, Motorolla or Sony phones. Apple just make more profit at the expense of the carriers, and I feel nothing for them!
there are 720p screens out, and 1080p screens on the way, Retina has been surpassed. App store is 50/50, Android is very close in terms of apps plus the play store is more accessible and has more free content, pureview has everyone trashed in the camera department and of course the RAZR MAXX is king of battery life. I will give you the ability for worldwide simultaneous updates.

Actually Apple makes more profit at the expense of you, they could offer their phones for a grand or more cheaper and still make a profit, its you that is paying, not the carriers, don't be naive

None of those things were standard when the iPhone came out which obviously is what he meant. Most people still keep their phones for at least 2 years.

1080p = 1920 x 1080 pixels
Retina = 960 x 640 pixels (on 3,5" iPhone 4)

1080p refers to a fixed number of pixels regardless of screen size. The smaller the screen, the higher the density. The retina display on an iPhone 4 actually already has a higher pixel density than a 40" 1080p TV.

According to your argument, there are lots of individual phones that have a single feature better than the iPhone. Big deal. In my opinion the year old iPhone 4S already has the best combination of all these features, and the iPhone 5 is still to come!

If Apple sold their phones for a grand less, the carriers would just make more profit and their contract packages would be unchanged - I wouldn't be the one to benefit. There is no evidence to suggest that any of the carriers would offer hugely discounted contracts if Apple reduced their price.

Two articles I read today, not directly related to each other, but related to the whole Apple/Android debate:-

Who Moved Apple’s Cheese? The Role Of The Knock-Off Effect In Innovation
Knock-offs help drive the prices down for the consumer, forcing innovation. It’s all part of the innovation ecosystem. Even though it’s frustrating for the inventors to be copied, they’re innovators by nature, so they are in the best position to respond to it and stay one step ahead. That market pressure is what continues to drive more and more value to the end-users. Today you can buy a pizza cutter that is very effective thanks to the designs that were created due to market pressures brought on by knock-offs in the Cycle of Innovation.

Samsung Claims Its Phones Don’t Infringe On Apple Patents Because Android Multitouch Sucks
While the big Apple vs Samsung case is finished in the US, there are plenty of other patent skirmishes between the two here and around the globe. In an attempt to narrowly avoid a recall and ban in the Netherlands, Samsung threw Android under the bus, claiming that its’ phones couldn’t be infringing because Android multitouch just isn’t good enough to do so.

The patent in question here is “touch event model” which has to do with preventing users from accidentally pressing two different buttons at the same time. Both phones can do this, but iOS does it automatically, and Samsung lawyers are arguing that because Android can’t and doesn’t, the phones aren’t infringing.

If that distinction doesn’t cut it, the resulting bans could interrupt Samsung’s sales in all of Europe, since its distribution centre is located in the Netherlands. It seems like a sort of desperate move to fall back on calling your operating system (and your product) inferior but desperate times call for desperate meaures.

huh?

For me, the user experience has been so good that I'll probably be switching to OS X

That's because it's so basic.

If you make an OS that can only do X, Y and Z - it'll be pretty solid and some people may refer to it as 'good'.

I prefer something that does from A - Z ... 5 different ways to unlock, add information I want, icons I want, play things I want ... options. I was amazed going from iOS to Android.

Most my queries in the Apple subsection are met with 'can't be done' or 'why? I've NEVER attempted that so it OBVIOUSLY isn't important'.

I've had had very few Android queries because I can do everything

Dolby, you sound like someone who gets bored very easily or quickly. What are you going to do about the couple year upgrade cycle on android?

I don't get bored easily ... but c'mon, some customisation is great - right?
Surely you want to make your own phone more 'personal'?

After a while you grow bored of simply playing with your device. You actually start doing stuff or work on it.

That's because you have no option?

You can't play with it because Apple said so - so the natural thing is to say 'we don't want to anyway!'
