Amazing then that every phone manufacturer has been trying to catch up ever since! Before the iPhone was launched in 2007 the Blackberry was the most popular smartphone. Where are they now? The original Android prototype phone were based on the BB design - they quickly switched to touchscreens after the iPhone was released.

Remember, the original iPhone was only available in the US, so Samsung made phones that deliberately looked similar, and flooded the rest of the world with these lookalikes.

Samsung have improved their designs, and the S3 is a great phone, but they grew their smartphone business based on originally copying the iPhone design, and then improving on that.

I guess your feeling insecure about your iPhone purchase :erm: I mean, must feel really bad paying alot of money for something that doesn't even remotely cost that much to make...

Manufacturers passed the iPhone early on and continue to this day. The iPhone outsells them - but it's certainly not better ... especially the first one.

I bought the Samsung i780 less than a year after the iPhone came out and the phone was technically far better than an iPhone of the time.

I have the S3 now and chuckle at friends with iPhone

Examples: The Retina screen, the App Store, camera quality, battery life, and most important to me; the ability to ship the latest OS version simultaneously, worldwide, on the same day.

Just to name a few that made me choose an iPhone over anything else available at the time. And the iPhone was no more expensive on contract than the top Samsung, HTC, Motorolla or Sony phones. Apple just make more profit at the expense of the carriers, and I feel nothing for them!

Apple and camera quality don't always go hand in hand ... especially the iPad :/

The original didn't even have one - and the iPad 2 was running a *cough* 0.7MP camera up until 2012. They've at least made the iPad with a 5MP bring it to 2009 standards ....

The phone camera is also pretty average to everything around it. Phones are out now pushing 10+ MP ...

Technical specs are so 1990. Apple have proved that the majority of people are more interested in the user experience than the spec sheet. For example, Apple resisted multi-tasking, as they knew it would adversely effect battery life. My 2 year old iPhone 4 still has better battery life than most Android phones.

The S3 is a great phone, but the build quality isn't as good as the iPhone (in my opinion), and while the big screen is nice, I find the physical size of the phone inconvenient.

So you believe that more megapixels means better quality? There is a lot more to making a good camera, like low light performance.

But a 0.7MP camera isn't going to match a 5MP camera on any planet

Plus I'm sure you've seen the numerous reviews between smartphone cameras? They're all reasonably close in real world tests with the iPhone generally coming 2nd or 3rd place ... don't quite see the hype about the camera tbh?

You constantly seem to harp on on features the original iPhone was missing, you need to update your knowledge base if you want people to take your opinion seriously. Likewise for iOS. Everything you mentioned was introduced generations ago. Move on, Apple has.

Why are you yammering on about iPad camera? Nobody uses their tablet as a camera. 4s camera was definitely best in class at the time though; still stands up to sgs3 IMO.

IPad front camera is important for Skype - this was a major problem with the first iPad.

Rear camera is important for document scanning - I use this often when away from home.

To each his own. I use many Google apps (even Google+), and I really wanted to like Android, but there were just so many negatives, like battery life and having to rely on the manufacturers to make OS updates available, so I decided to try an iPhone. I haven't regretted it for a moment, and will probably get an iPhone 5 when my contract is up for renewal.

For me, the user experience has been so good that I'll probably be switching to OS X, especially as Microsoft are now also trying to emulate the Apple ecosystem with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

AFAIK, Apple cannot share apps between OS X and iOS? If I am right, then Microsoft will be a step ahead.
Not to mention some integration with my XBox.

I am even considering going WP8 just so I have a single platform for everything I do. Phone, tablet AND PC all integrated is a huge plus for me.
Sammy coming with a WP8 version of the S3 which sounds awesome.

I'd be interested to pinpoint exactly when Apple stopped being able to innovate. Presumably sometime since they released the first ever retina-quality laptop display in June. Terrible for a company to decline so irrevocably in the space of 3 months.

The retina display has been around for some time now, so to make it bigger for bigger devices aren't really innovation. If Samsung first used Amoled screens on phones and then later started using them on laptops would that count as innovation. Nope.

When I talk about fresh ideas I mean it in the context of disruptive ideas/tech that starts a new niche as was the case from iPod to iPad (and everything inbetween). Apple needs a new "thing" to maintain their momentum.

The concept of retina has been around on phones for two years (since iPhone4). The concept of retina tablet displays has been around for about a year (since iPad3). So why did it take so long for someone else to look at the next logical step and make a retina quality laptop? It's because the most obvious ideas are only obvious in hindsight. And yes I'd personally LOVE Samsung to make an Amoled laptop, wouldn't you? That would be a bold and innovative step for them.

As far as disruptive, I'd say a retina laptop screen is highly disruptive to the laptop space. The best proof of that is that Samsung's bringing out one now too.

As far as needing a new thing to maintain momentum, it remains to be seen but there is certainly no evidence of slowing momentum from Apple at present. More wishful thinking than anything else. So where are all these disruptive ideas from all these other tech companies as they are apparently so easy to make?
