Apple TV 4 - Apps, Tips & Tricks

Got a new Apple TV and figured make a new topic just for related content. Thus far I have it done too much and setup is a breeze is you have an iPhone or iPad already configured.

Tip: Don't play with your ATV4 remote till it's all plugged in and stable on screen.. If you mistakenly chose a language of won't beable to set it till its configured or if on the latest firmware.. Reset. (The screen does not let you go back, extremely dumb). Setting up with the device requires that it be placed literally next to the Apple TV.. Yes m serious it will fail if more than 0.5m

Thus far I have tried out the Netflix & Hulu Apps both of which seem to push vid better that via the tv app. I was kinda surprised by this.. I'm thinking ShowMax could have a HUGE advantage of they made an app which allowed background download of the media to the device. In SA this would be a killer advantage and media management would be auto or app controlled. I'm kinda wondering if Hulu will do a similar strategy as it would be a winner

I don't use any VPNs, so I have a very standard local selection, therefore my experience won't be as enjoyable but my daily usage includes Plex, Youtube and for UK Live TV I use the free filmon app via airplay from iPhone or iPad.

This is all I need and it's been great so far, don't miss DSTV at all.

Interestingly I find that my Xbox one streams better than my Apple TV 3.

I have a 10 meg line and occasionally when Telkom is up to **** the Xbox one does a better job of mitigating buffering.

Keen on trying out the new Apple TV so that I can leave the Apple TV 3 in the room and then have the new one in the lounge for music.

Just annoyed that they don't support optical out anymore. My amp only does pass through audio on hdmi and I'm not buying a new amp just for a connector.

Maybe I could plug it into the Xbox and then output the audio via optical there, need to test.

Another quick thing to mention..
You can have multiple Apple IDs on the Apple TV. When u switch IDs the Apps remain like with iOS devices so u can get your US restricted apps installed with 2ndary US account and then switch to primary one with iCloud and Apple Music etc.

Family Sharing accounts auto show in the list

My apps don't remain. If I switch to my UK ID, NowTV appears. If I switch to my US ID, NowTV is gone.

Assuming you haven't removed the ID, just added another to the list.

I've done this with Netflix, HBO, Hulu and some others.. One thing I did notice though was that Apple TV Series app disappears. Additionally Siri only works in US

Does this work with the ATV 3?

Nope.. the Apps on ATV3 are served as web apps which are loaded on the ATV3 per region, like with smart tvs changing the region wipes it all. With the old device the storage (8/16GB) is used for content being streamed.

Another Tip: tapping the Screen button brings up the App switcher you see on iOS and like on iOS u can kill apps. Useful for switching apps or killing Netflix to switch country ;-)

This is strange, all my apps remain and update in the background regardless of which ID I'm signed into on the Apple TV 4.

The only problem I have with the Apple TV is that Apple Music is very inconsistent with regards to music added to the library. Some recently added stuff show on the MacBook, iPhone and iPad but not on the Apple TV. Apple Music integration needs work I'd say... And why the hell does Siri not work for music like it does on the iPhone?

one of my best features of the new Apple TV is CEC.
Meaning if you turn the apple tv on via the remote or even set your phone to AirPlay.
It turns my AV Receiver ON and set the correct HDMI channel and turns my TV on.
I can also control the volume for my AV Receiver using the Apple TV.

Is Siri working with SA itunes accounts yet??? I logged in with my SA iTunes account couple weeks back and it said Siri not supported so went back to my US account.

I was being stupid. I'm taking about my ATV3 instead of the ATV4 which I don't have.

Siri seems to be limited initially to US.

CEC is great. I noticed that Bravia Sync works, my Sony TV remote works flawlessly.

Yip works flawlessly with my Samsung Smart tv.

This is on my holiday wishlist :)
How does the TV4 work with different regions?
I have ans SA iTunes Account ( with apple music), and unotelly, and I want to run BBC most of the time. and Hulu, and Netflix.
Does this mean I'll have to constantly change accounts / regions etc..
Or if I switch regions, will some apps delete themselves, and need to be re-installed when switching back ?

No. Once installed, the app remains even when switching regions.

Regarding Plex, iv found that Infuse Quality is far better and also DTS support, the program is expensive but worth it as I think it'll receive constant updates and upgrades.
Infuse I think doesn't transcode on the fly like Plex.

MrMC also I noticed the quality was better than Plex which I have setup on Full HD etc.
