Apple TV 4 - Apps, Tips & Tricks

Thought I would jump in here, Do you think it's still worth getting a previous gen Apple TV, the 3? How long do you think will it still be supported? This will mainly be for streaming Netflix, Showmax etc.

I installed TVPlayer from the UK App Store but if I open it, it's blank. There's menus showing Live TV, Channels etc but if you select one of them ,it's blank. No content. iPlayer works fine though.

You may need to use a proxy or VPN, something like UnoTelly.

Depends on use case. AirPlay is still more widely supported and efficient than ChromeCast for general purpose of an Apple User.. Now before android guys get antsy.. I mean in the ecosphere.. Screen mirroring from a notebook sucks on both of the platforms but the one thing I love about AirPlay is that I can do so with most content(app, web, media) from IOS with the least delay and unlike chromecast this automakes the device stream direct more frequently.

I think it depends on use case. ATV3 is other device dependent while ATV4 is independent. So I use my ATV3 in bedroom but it's almost 100% of time as a bridge for another device to show something on monitor or play music/podcast while my ATV4 I use mostly with apps on it and sometimes AirPlay content.

Do NOT buy AppleTV 4th gen!

It just launched but is already outdated. Does NOT support HEVC.

Rumor has it Apple will soon launch a 5th gen AppleTV to fix the mistake.

The Apple TV4 doesn't support 4K and only does 1080p. Apps and better AirPlay makes it a worthwhile purchase if you are tied into the Apple ecosystem

My eyesight is nowhere near good enough to see the difference between 4K and 1080p across the length of my lounge. Come to think of it, my broadband (in South African terms ...) is also nowhere near good enough to feed me with 4K telly.

But I like ATV 4, despite the flawed controller and utter lack of content/apps in SA.

The 4K display is not the major problem but the fact that H.265 (HEVC) is replacing H.264 for ALL content. Thus you will soon have content on your NAS etc. which you want to view with VLC/Infuse on your AppleTV4 but won't be able to watch.

That's okay too. My head is in the sand and I watch content via iTunes or streaming.
But yeah ... see your point.

The planet is also waiting for the new Cinema Display, which is long overdue.

I don't quite think it's the "planet" waiting for the new Cinema Display since most of us won't be able to afford it anyway but I'm willing to accept one as a very early Christmas present once it's released. :D

Just a quick question, anyone here use a SA app store account on their ATV4 and what is the app selection like?

I suppose to get Netflix and Hulu you will need a USA store account but what if I download those apps and then change over my account to SA, surely that will work the same as it does on my phone?

Only asking as I am thinking of swapping back to SA store for Apple Music as it is cheaper on the SA store than it is overseas.

Also, do we have the same selection as games and "general" apps?

Thanks.

Apps will remain when you switch stores.

Ok so it's the same as other iOS devices then.

I will first sign in with US account and make sure apps load then will change to SA account.

Do you know if all the games are the same between the two stores on Apple TV?

Quick question, will it not make sense to create a new SA account and then setup family sharing and add my US account for Apple Music? Or is that not possible cross stores? I plan on setting up family share for Apple Music anyway for my fiancé to also have access to music but can I then block apps etc. I don't want her apps on my phone and vica-versa.

So you're wanting to have your US account on 1 device, a SA account on another device, then use family sharing to "connect" the two? I don't see why that would be a problem to be honest.

With regards to seeing your fiance's apps, you wont' see them, I have family sharing with a few people set up and I don't see their apps etc, you can see their purchases though. Also remember that anything she buys will come off your credit card then.

Just remember if you want to see the music across multiple devices you need iTunes Match

What TV channels are available legimitately on the ATV4 in RSA with my SA iTunes account? I rent my movies through Apple and I am quite happy with that but I am prepared to try Netflix (now that it is in South Africa) and Showmax.
I'm particularly interested in News and Sports (not rugby( channels.
Also can I get HBO Go to watch PPV boxing?

Cant seem to get my Galaxy tab 3 and Apple TV 4 to see each other, with iphone/ipad airplay is easy as expected, is there anything on Droid that can give me easy access to control feature for Airplay support?
An app i can run in the background giving me Airplay access.

I have tried allcast etc but it doesn't work.

Found this link helps to check whats going on App wise for those who don't have the Apple TV yet and if you don't want to keep switching stores on the ATV4 to check whats happening. It gives a breakdown of Apps per Store per country.
Signing up for a free account gives you access to all countries data worldwide.

PS the top App on the SA store currently is Showmax interesting as Netflix is an open option now.

The top App on the SA store currently is Showmax interesting as Netflix is an open option now.

Besides being available for a while, given Netflix SA vs Showmax.. The latter is better due to selection but thing to remember is that everyone who has Netflix prior to SA opening up got it initially from iTunes US. Those that do get it often ask how to switch regions noticed.

So Showmax on ATV4 is actual native app like Netflix and Hulu?

But not on ATV3?
