Apple TV 4 - Apps, Tips & Tricks

More of a rant regarding ShowMax, but their iOS app does not even support Airplay, you're forced to mirror the screen. Ridiculous... they've yet to launch an Apple TV app so you'd think they'd meet subscribers half way and support Airplay within their app for now.

Yes EXACTLY my frustration too. I had a quick search and found that they are busy with a ATV4 app since October/November(it's mentioned in s blog of theirs).

As far as I'm aware of via tech blogs & podcasts converting an iOS app to tvOS is not too hard so unless they trying to add more feature I'm not sure what the holdup is. Again tho.. the ability to download to device will be a massive advantage in SA, Africa etc but they are moving a bit too slow for my liking and I may cancel my sub if they don't release something decent by mid Jan.

I don't think the ability to download will be available on the Apple TV. Due to the mandatory on demand resources system, an app can only store as much 2.2GB at any one time.

That's good for non-hd content.. I suspect Apple rentals do this ie load on device and play back. I've heard of people starting rentals and told that it will take a few min.. Then later get an already on tv that it's ready for viewing.

My experience has been very different in that the content starts right away but it doesn't download all the way to the end initially. It downloads about a quarter at a time. That said, this happened in earlier versions of tvOS and my purchases are in HD. I haven't watched a purchase since 9.1 has been released.

BBC iPlayer seems to work well.

My 10c - if you have a fast broadband connection and good ISP, then this is the device you want to cut the cord with.

Airplay works like a dream on this (compared to my ATV2), mirroring Supersport from iPhone to ATV is excellent in 720p quality.

Netflix, iPlayer, Sky news, Plex. All brilliant.

Wondering if there is a way around this, but iPlayer only works when i'm signed in to a uk account.
when i switch back to my sa iTunes account i get a (02001) error when trying to open a steam in iplayer

UnoTelly?

SpeedTest app works great! Use it a lot with streaming so I know if I need to reboot router if need be or figure out if another device is downloading something. (I wish I had better ADSL or VDSL at home)

Yes, on Unotelly. Working on other devices, just the apple tv / iPlayer seems to be giving random 02001 errors.

Aah okay you made it sound like the iTunes account made it work.

Probably some background itunes routing or something that needs the UK account to be logged in.

Checked with Unotelly, they are aware of the iPlayer issue, and busy fixing :)

One slight annoying factor is the touch pad scrolling, its not too forgiving on my fat fingers and the speed at which i try to scroll.... lol

But i love it!

My Setup at home:
Itunes Media Server running full time (Music, Movies and some series)
Apple TV 3 in main bedroom with a 32" FHD LED TV (Streams from my server)
Apple TV 4 in Living room with a 55' FHD LED TV (Streams from netflix and server, Also apps for the kids etc)
Apple iPhone 4s 16Gb in Kitchen streaming music from server in JBL dock
Apple iPhone 4s 16GB in Daughters room streaming bedtime stories etc from server in JBL dock
Apple TV 3 in workshop connected to a 27" computer monitor that streams various things for me while i work on computers

I love apple....

TVPlayer is also a pretty cool app (from the UK iStore) - has a few free channels that you can stream, or you can pay 5 pounds a month and have access to many other channels. The quality is a bit iffy, not sure if my ADSL line is contributing to that.

I installed TVPlayer from the UK App Store but if I open it, it's blank. There's menus showing Live TV, Channels etc but if you select one of them ,it's blank. No content. iPlayer works fine though.
