Apple TV 4 - Apps, Tips & Tricks

Multichoice has to be the most technologically backward media company of all time... I wouldn't mind a DStv or Supersport app.

Can't wait to try this. Waiting for my usb type c cable to be delivered tomorrow.

Hi,
Did you ever manage to get Kodi running on your apple tv? I managed to install on my Apple Tv 4 yesterday but I'm struggling to install any of the addons. Every time i put in the url i get a error that it can't connect to that address and that i should check my network connection. However the network connection is fine because i can play the pre installed addons like Youtube and Aljazeera.

Hey guys

So I've just got my Apple TV 4.

I have a US iTunes Account, a UK iTunes Account and a SA iTunes Account.

I'm not sure which account to use with the Apple TV. Is it possible to have multiple accounts on one device?

The reason I ask is, in an ideal world, I would like to run US Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now and BBC iPlayer all together.

Is this possible? Or would I constantly need to be switching my Unlocator DNS settings between UK and US?

If you had to pick one iTunes region for the Apple TV 4, which would you guys go for?

Thanks in advance!

Be careful... and it wasn't even the kids.. it was me! 1399 later for a new remote and found the survivor cover for it too

Or you could just load the app on your phone to connect to the ATV. I love the ability to use Siri, well my 4 YO does anyways, he can't spell yet, so searching YouTube made easier

The account is irrelevant to those things short of getting them downloaded the first time.

So ultimately you need to flip stuff on Unlocator regardless as that's what shows the apps where the traffic is coming from.

So you can download the Apps once and then switch.

I'm quite happy with my SA account.

Only thing that sucks is why didn't they add the volume control to the App?

I use HDMI-CEC with my Receiver so don't need any other remote but the Siri remote.

Thanks man. Appreciate the help.

On a different note, are you the same SauronZA from the old Xbox 360 SA forums?!?

Considering taking the plunge on the ATV4 - given that it will allow Plex as a native app - and there are ways to get Kodi installed.

Quick question - have movies etc. sitting on a DAS, connected to my Mac Mini.
On the ATV2 - streaming series is mostly fine >> using Infuse to connect to the DAS >> but any of the bigger movies, and we run into serious buffering issues.

Will the ATV4 solve the latter? Assuming I run them through Plex, will the transcoding and newer device mean Plex will be able to stream those movies off the DAS without buffering? Or is this not in any way a guarantee?

Did you come right? Didn't realise there were issues surrounding the signing etc., which apparently forces one to have to regularly reinstall it.

I used ipwn store, for R170 a year you get Kodi and a couple of other cool apps which i think is worth it.

Sooo... Pulled the trigger on the Takealot deal, and it arrived on Friday.
So far >> the interface is nice. Don't mind the remote, but using the Phone app until I find a cover - that thing is like the proverbial bar of soap.

As for the streaming - it's actually doing worse. :wtf:
Not in the good books with the SO at the moment.

Kodi used to run through a SD movie with zero buffering, start to finish on the ATV2.
Not so Netflix. Haven't been able to try Showmax yet - but will give it a buzz soon.

Weirdly, Netflix movies seem to be doing better than the few episodes of series' that we tried. But neither are great, compared to the ATV2.

YouTube, all fine.

Plex has been the biggest dissapointment - and Infuse 4, no better.
Trying to pull a series episode off the DAS, sees endless spinning, and the inevitable message to check network connection, that my speeds are not enough to view the episode - and this is on the absolute lowest quality setting.

This when using Plex on the iPad works with little issue, connecting to the same DAS >> Mac Mini.

The strange part - running Speedtest sees it clock 22mps Ping, and just under 6mb/s... So it's connection to the web, should be ok.

Might it be worth playing around with the Router, and allocating preference to the ATV4? Or would I need to look on the Mac Mini side?

DAS >> Mac Mini >> wifi >> Asus Router >> wifi >> ATV4.

Any troubleshooting tips?

I won't be able to help you with your setup but I have zero issues streaming on the Apple TV 4. We usually have multiple streams going simultaneously and I haven't encountered any issues thus far with Netflix, Hulu, The CW, iPlayer, ABC... Showmax on the other hand is just pathetic. No buffering etc, just the quality of the stream is k@k. There's usually visible artifacts on the stream... Don't know if it's just me or if it is poor encoding.

I have a 10Mbps link with Wirulink btw.

Also, Plex runs smoothly on my end.

Thanks. That's the frustration - pretty sure this should be running much smoother than the old ATV2, but it's just not there yet. Will make some queries out on the rest of the web, and see what I can find.
