^ this. Smart tv's are horrible things. We have a top of the line Samsung in one of our board rooms and its absolutely terrible.

You need a TV streaming box for piracy - really [ very surprised ].

All you really need for piracy is a cheap cellular phone with a torrent app and a micro SD card to suit. Oh sorry - forgot about the free Wi-Fi at work, some or other unfortunate family member, Spur etc. And Bob is your Uncle ...

A steaming box can I suppose play back the pirated material, via SD card or USB device. Unless you buy an Apple TV variant- then you have to add a computer with iTunes to the mix ...

If you are inclined to pirate media ...

Edit:

You can plug a SD card or USB stick/drive into your Smart TV as well.

Smart TV's are also cheap enough to junk because the new Netflix app does not run on it due to limited memory/processor etc.

I'd rather just buy a new streaming box ...

Had an Apple TV in SA, loved it due to piggy backing off my parents cable account and got to stream 60+ channels.

Only looking at getting an Apple TV now in the states is for the renting of 4K movies. Rental of 4K movies is very limited online

I got an LG smart tv right now and don’t use re smart functions at all.

Separation of functions.

I prefer a console to play games and a media player to play media.

Plus if the wife wants to watch something different, it's cheaper to just get another media player for the room where she can choose between DSTV now (which isn't on consoles), Plex and Netflix.

That said I would spend that much on a media player. The price of a mi box is as high as I'd go...

Nah I agree which is why I have both.

But in many cases especially with budget constraints it’s a solid solution when you add a media remote to the console.
 
If you don't go 4K, then go with Amazon Fire TV stick $39 on the ordinary Full HD TV. If you want Amazon shipping to SA, then add $15 and you miss Alexa remote, so use your purchasing power wise. :) It is your starter, as you grow up, get something better.

You get a refined 1080p device (like Apple TV) with built-in Netflix app for a low price +/-R600. Netflix subscription is still from $7.99, problem solved. Forget LIT bundles from Telkom or racist Cell C bundles, don't buy streaming device if you don't have a stable and unlimited 4Mbps feed exclusively for this application.

Fire TV Stick can be side-loaded with Terrarium TV, Kodi and many other Android apps. Terrarium TV gives me the best streaming experience ever and everything is free. New apps are coming, Tea TV is on my list to try it next.
