Apple Watch thread

I am not sure who wants or would use a browser on a Watch

µBrowser is a new web browser for Apple Watch that’s surprisingly great

One Apple app that’s been missing from the Apple Watch is Safari. It shouldn’t be too surprising that Apple has chosen to omit it from such a small device, but now that the displays are significantly larger, it’s time for them to reconsider. A few years ago, Apple added the ability for apps to show web views if a link was tapped. But there’s been little to no movement on expanding that functionality. µBrowser is a new app that attempts to change that.

Developed by Arno Appenzeller, µBrowser is a $0.99 app that expands what’s possible with the Apple Watch. It’s not perfect, but that’s not Arno’s fault – Apple could do far more to make websites appear better on the watch face. Let’s get the weird quirks out of the way first.

Images on some sites don’t load quickly, and sometimes, they don’t load at all. It’s unclear if it’s simply that they’re taking a long time to load, if they’re incompatible formats, or if they just can’t load at all for some other strange reason.

Another quirk of browsing the web on Apple Watch is that custom fonts aren’t going to render on a lot of websites. For example, Daring Fireball looks very different in µBrowser because it’s forced to use standardized web fonts.

Has anyone tried linking an Apple Watch on Telkom? Does this even give you an option? I see they already have a data sharing linked sim feature why not expand this to eSIM? Can this be because of their VoLTE issues?

Telkom eSim works like a charm on the iPhone. Don't think it will work on the watch but sadly I don't have an LTE watch to try.

Apple Watch Diary: Keeping my old Apple Watch as an overnight device

When I bought the S5 ceramic, I said that, for now at least, I would be keeping my old Apple Watch as a dedicated sleep tracker – but wasn’t sure whether I’d continue to do so.

I’m honestly not sure whether I’ll keep this up, but since the watch is worth only slightly more than the trade-in Apple would offer me, I’ll hang onto it for now …

Having done so for a little over a week, I’m now sold on the idea of having both a Day and a Night watch. There are a couple of personal factors which helped sell it to me, but beyond those, I think there are some decent arguments for a low-cost second watch.

Sleep tracking

Admittedly I do have a specific, temporary reason to have a particular interest in sleep-tracking. I got COVID just before Christmas, and my energy has been slow to return. For a time, pretty much all I was doing was working and sleeping, and for several weeks afterwards I was still going to bed in the early evening. Things are slowly improving, but my bedtimes – and actual sleep times – are still very variable, so it’s helpful to have actual data on how much sleep I’m getting.

But beyond that, many of us – perhaps even most – are not getting as much sleep as we ideally should, and without hard data, it’s easy to fool ourselves into thinking we are. So routine sleep-tracking is something I think has ongoing value.

As I found back in 2018, sleep tracking doesn’t necessarily require a second Watch. But it has to be said that it’s much more convenient with two Watches – and there are some affordable options now, discussed below.

I’ve tried a few different sleep trackers, and found that none are 100% reliable at distinguishing sleep from being awake-but-relatively-still. But NapBot, as recommended by my colleague Chance, has been the most reliable. There is an annual subscription, but at $10/year it’s worth it for the better performance.

My apple watch decided it had enough of my attitude. So if you put it on the charger the logo lights up but the watch does not charge.

Send it in to Apple and they shipped it off to the technicians.

Quote came back "Replacement of unit" so the battery died and I guess Apple just cant or wont fix it.

Do you thing the ifixit okes will be able to fix it or is it a nice ornament now?

Seems Ifixit says it can

Will take it to the local repair shop and see what they say

Apple or the SA company that sells Apple products?

Apple will replace the battery for $79/£75 on all watches (other than the original gen 0 iirc).

Not sure the apple store sends it off, but I have to "assume" its the SA Company as Apple is not here them selves as far as I know.

What will it eventually cost if you need to send the watch to America and back?

Guess I can send it along with my parents they are going to UK and then Paris so might as well drop it off at the Apple store in London and pick it up when they come back.

I was going to suggest that.

Apple Watch firmware can now be restored from an iPhone running iOS 15.4

Apple Watch doesn’t have any data ports accessible to users, which means that only Apple is able to repair your watch if there’s a firmware failure. Luckily, iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 introduce a new tool to let users wirelessly restore the Apple Watch firmware using their iPhone.

Shortly after releasing iOS 15.4 and watchOS 8.5 to the public on Monday, Apple updated its support article with information on what users need to do if the Apple Watch stops working. Interestingly, while the old version of the article instructed users to contact Apple Support to set up a mail-in repair, the article now reveals that users may be able to restore the Apple Watch firmware themselves.

If for some reason your Apple Watch stops working (such as when it crashes during the update process), an alert will appear on your iPhone asking you to restore the Apple Watch.

Your Apple Watch might show an animation asking you to bring it close to an iPhone if your watch experiences a problem that requires it to be updated or restored. You might also see a red exclamation point on your watch. If your Apple Watch with watchOS 8.5 or later displays an animation showing a watch and iPhone being brought close together, follow these steps.

Apple Watch may only get blood pressure tool in 2024

Samsung's Galaxy Watch4 family features a blood pressure monitor already, but Apple is taking its sweet time in adding something similar to its wearables. According to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company may only have an Apple Watch with blood pressure monitoring on the market in 2024.

This is because it's apparently "hit some snags", which mean "the technology isn't expected to be ready until 2024 at the earliest", according to the omnipresent "people with knowledge of the matter".

Teams are already working on this, but accuracy has allegedly been a challenge in determining whether a user has high blood pressure. The feature has been planned "for at least four years", but eventually the release might actually slip to 2025.

Don't get too excited about Samsung's version. I had it. You have to calibrate it with an external monitor every month. Otherwise it stops working.

I got a Series 7 45mm Nike black Apple Watch today, and quickly discovered that straps are a problem in SA. As far as I can tell, there are hardly any available. I really wanted the black Nike nylon one but iStore didn't have it in 45mm. I assumed it would easy to find these things online via iStore, Macnificent, Takealot etc. but I'm finding basically nothing.

Wtf is this nonsense. Where do you guys buy your Apple-made watch straps from?
