Apple Watch thread

Considering one of these at the moment but have a few questions... Looking at the Apple Watch Sport.

Is the 42mm much better than the 38mm in daily use? I'll only use it for fitness and notifications... No games and that stuff.

Can I use it with more than one device? Not at the same time of course. I've got an iPod Touch I'd like to use it with every now and then (music control) as well as my iPhone on a daily basis.

Regarding the above, can I sync the music playlist with the iPod and have it connected to the iPhone afterwards?

How loud is the speaker? Will it work well with calls and sat nav while in a car for example?

Can I connect my iPhone to the watch and my car's Bluetooth system at the same time?

Durability of the Sport model? Will I crack it if I bump a wall?

Worth buying or is it one of those purchases that end up in the drawer?

I'd be weary as a new iteration/improved version is likely in the next 1-3 months.

I have the 38mm one.. It really depends on your wrist size. If you have a thick wrist, trust me the small one looks weird and more girly (the watches are unisex). I reckon wrist size matches up with finger size so smaller wrist, smaller finger. Try unlocking it at the store and see if you have issues.

Things I use it for are: seeing notifications, alarms, start/stop workouts & Strava, wallet, Dataman(cell data monitor), control audio (podcast, music), record audio (nifty to do from arm), shopping list (tick off items), to do list.. And respond to messages via audio (Siri like) when I am too lazy to type or driving.

All in all the use cases are not that fantastic as most apps form the 2nd screen control/monitor/interact-audio type. Thus far I'd say no app has really done anything revolutionary but maybe a new OS and dev kit opens up more and allows for more possibility.

Not sure.. It binds to an iPhone only (the media controls) it seems. Not sure why this limitation exists other than the fact that the iphone basically controls it. I do see you can have multiple watches per phone but not the other way around. U can connect to other devices via Bluetooth but not sure whwt apps exist to control it

Dunno

How loud is the speaker? Will it work well with calls and sat nav while in a car for example?

U can make a call from it yes and look like dick Tracy but yah it's not the best and I always have my headset with me. Your watch is basically a receiver type device and not an origin for calls, so no.. U can connect to it to push eg music/audio from watch to car, car handling calls from phone and music from watch is dependent on car supporting multiple devices. You can also connect to other Bluetooth LE fitness sensors, eg cadence.

I never do this as all my music, podcasts resides on phone and the watch has limited storage (5-6GB). So doesn't make sense to me to use it that way.. Sure maybe gym but sports where gps is needed u need your phone(and ears).

My iPhone 6S Plus seems to handle the multiple connections well and one I had watch, car audio, notebook(Internet) all connected and in use simultaneously. So seems stable on Bluetooth.

Can I connect my iPhone to the watch and my car's Bluetooth system at the same time?

Yes, see above.

Durability of the Sport model? Will I crack it if I bump a wall?

This I worry about hence I bought the Griffen Survivor ( my rating⭐⭐⭐⭐️ 4/5 because the screen cover isn't flush always but I guess it's the best they can do) cover for it. I've already broken the original screen cover so looking for a new screen cover to replace (I just old iPad screen cover and put it in there) but I must say without this I'm sure I'd have a busted screen or pitted (more likely) one as knock warm occasionally against things like wall in a parallel fashion etc. also on the 38mm it makes it look bigger and also no one notices it's an Apple Watch which is kinda good as people thing it's a big screen Casio.

Worth buying or is it one of those purchases that end up in the drawer?

Check release cycle, we now about 1-3 months away. Likely the next one will have additional sensors (kinda part of the point of device) and slimmer?

Why do u want from it? For a different way to get notifications and monitor your stats point of view.. It's unlikely to end up on your drawer. From a awesome techie item it will end up there as it's not all that great and use cases presently are kinda lame.

Again let me repeat.. It's not revolutionary.. I'm thinking more use cases will come ones the platform is opened up and more people use & consider possibilities of what they can do with the SDK (kinda why I'm wearing one).

Still looking for one... I've got one in mind but not so keen on buying it just yet.

Thinking of waiting for version 2 :). The other thing stopping me is that I'll be limited to iPhone only if I get one

More reason to wait as I said. Rumor has it that the v2 one will support non-Apple owners with some but less limited functionally. That combo with the likelihood of additional sensors and hardware efficiency gains should make the next one a good one to get for 1st time buyers.

I reckon it might take till v3 or v4 before apps, use cases and peak of sensor & functionality vs real world needs etc get hit right.

Finally got my watch yesterday :). Pretty happy so far.

38mm Apple Watch Stainless Steel. Milanese Strap.

Aha lovely man. Looks classy.

What's your take on it & how much coin did it set you?

Lastly the "lag"...fine or a pain?

It does look rather good :)

Quite a nice device... Cost me R7500 from a mate who didn't really use it. It's not too bad considering the retail price is R12300

No lag that I've noticed... I'm not using it to its full potential but I'm quite enjoying what I've tried so far. Seems like a decent toy :)

Install any 3rd party app on the phone and try to launch it. It's quicker to get the phone out of your pocket and launch it from there.
Hopefully Watch 2 will be snappier.

Decided to bite the bullet, and got myself a new Watch Sport 42mm from the iStore, I'm very happy with it so far.

What I like:
- Nightstand mode, to serve as an alarm clock next to the bed, I just have to lightly bump the bedside table for the time to show
- The fact that I can keep my iPhone in my pocket, and just quickly raise my wrist to view the time and any notifications
- The workout functions, measuring heartbeat, calories consumption, etc.
- As luck would have it, it supports the app I use for daily "brain training" (Elevate)
- I like the fact that I can use Shazam on it

What I don't like:
- Siri doesn't register my voice input about 10% of the time
- Maintaining the settings could be streamlined

Battery life is not too bad at all, everyone uses it differently, well to use yesterday as an example, I received two calls on it, used it a few times for iMessage, played some games on it, and tested out the remote camera function. Also demonstrated the various functions to a colleague who wanted to see. Left home 6:30am with a full charge, when I got home 17:30 it still had 68% battery power left.

Did not know that it uses green LED's to measure blood flow in order to measure heartbeat, quite cool.

Some of the functions are useful, others are gimmicks but nice, if nothing else. Some people like it, some people don't, I fall in the first category. Overall I'm happy with the speed and interface. Looking forward to install watch OS 3 next month.

Yes, I could have waited for the Watch 2 (they expect it to get released next month, and maybe it would have been available in SA 2-3 months after that, who knows), but maybe it would have been much more expensive and the additional functionality (according to the rumours) are not that critical to me.

Hope this mini review is useful for anybody considering one. Feel free to ask any questions.

I've had the same experience as you, also like the watch. I think next time I would get the sapphire screen though to reduce scratches

Anyone care to guess when we can expect the AW2 in ZA? Before Christmas? Or is that pushing things?

The iPhone 7 will definitely be here that time, my guess is sometime in mid October. The watch on the other hand I am not so sure of... Might be a while.

I'm more interested in the price reduction on the current model trickling down our way.
