Apple Watch thread

But then it's not a smart watch?

At least not best in the business as the fitbit has all that, GPS, lte, Whatsapp, music, Spotify, etc.

So if it can't stand out in fitness and it can't stand out in health, where does it stand out?

Why bother then? Use your Fitbit...if/when it eventually breaks then take a look at the AW and see if it offers you a worthwhile experience

Like the other products, with Apple you pay for the ecosystem first and features second. They have the benefit of having a closed hardware system so all their gadgets should play together nicely

Also, if you have one of those new-ish BMWs, you'll soon be able to connect your car to your phone and watch (if you have the latest Apple Watch) :)

What other hardware besides the Apple Watch is compatible with Apple health as a source?

I want to get one, I currently have the Fitbit.

I have mac and iPhone, that is why I am naturally now feeling the urge to get the watch too.

However, I am not entirely convinced that it is better than my Fitbit.

Can anyone with an Apple Watch please show me what your sleep tracking looks like?

Sleep tracking is very important to me.

This is Fitbit:

This looks like a good article covering the more advanced sleep apps available for the apple watch (given that the built-in sleep tracker is quite rudimentary)

I'm going to test the Napbot and Pillow apps out

Time permitting, I'll post some feedback here

(been wanting to do this for a while - @Thor s post provided the necessary motivation :p

Also, @Thor, over and above everything that has already been mentioned, I find my Apple Watch incredibly useful for:

- Apple Pay
- Auto unlocking my Macbook
- Quick access to the volume control for Airpods (music and podcasts)
- Quick access to podcast and music apps (no need to take phone out of pocket)
- Turn by turn directions for Maps when driving or cycling or walking (I used the walking functionality when I was in New York 2 years ago)

The other things have already been mentioned - notifications (whatsapp, SMS, etc - configurable to my preferences), etc

Ooof, this looks proper....

Maybe, I switch from Fitbit to Garmin, would be neat if the Garmin could sync with Apple Health?

This is probably why I would end up getting it.

Apple Pay I don't care for cause I have that with Fitbit already, I tap my Fitbit on any Point of Sale card machine like a normal card.

The unlocking of the imac would be nice, and if it does it for my iphone, cause Face ID with the mask is stupid.

And then I ordered Airpods Pro, so my idea would be to gym with the airpods pro instead of my current JBL DIVE as the dive isn't loud enough and then I can control my music with the apple watch - which technically I can do with fitbit as well since it is Bluetooth and cellular.

the Fitbit in question: - really runs circles around the current apple watch and this is a 3-year-old device...

That’s the base functionality I use in an Apple Watch 0 (original). (Ok turn by turn I don’t do, most of the time for off device stuff it’s slow)

Gps, cellular, sleep tracking, always on screen, better battery life, faster processor, nicer more detailed screen.. well that would be great but thus far there isn’t really a compelling feature for me to upgrade. I do wonder if an oximeter will be slapped on the next version due to its use case with covid.

Anyway just interesting that functionality wise.. they haven’t come up with something very compelling just yet.

Is the sleep detection on the Apple Watch at least automatic?

...please tell me you don't have to tell it your going to bed?

Yes & no. sleep tracking is determined by you setting a bed time. Then from there it will pick up if you go to sleep, until you wake up. It won't catch a mid afternoon nap, because it would be outside your bedtime.

Oximeter was included in the Series 6.

How to use the Blood Oxygen app on Apple Watch Series 6

What if I don't stick to my bed time?

Fitbit uses heart rate variation, temperature and respiratory to gauge sleeping automatically.

I just find apple watch stranger and stranger / less appealing.

And I'm an apple fan boy of note, iPhone, imac, macbook, pods, speakers etc

But my goodness I'm not obvious thet beyond nice looking products they are not in par software wise since 2019.

Windows and Android basically leapfrogged them on software.

Same in the watch side, wasn't apple the first company to make a smart watch?

Fitbit eating their lunch.

If only fitbit could sync with Apple health, that's my mine grudge point here, I want to use apple health, but thet would mean apple watch, but apple watch is a considerable downgrade compared to what I have already.

That's because the Apple Watch lacks a temperature sensor. It's the easiest way to automatically track sleep because your temperature drops as sleeping time approaches.

I believe the Series 7 will include a temperature sensor so maybe just hold on for a bit before you decide.

There are third party apps that are better than the default sleep detection functionality… Autosleep for example will detect sleeping without having to set a bed time, though it does also use that method if you configure it.

Have you given your Fitbit app permission to write data to Health? I have a Xiaomi scale and it writes data on Health.

Where do I do that?

There's no option to sync with health that I can see and that kind of makes sense because fitbit is probably apples single biggest competitor since it's OS / brand agnostic

Settings - Health - Data Access & Devices. Then select the Fitbit app (whatever it’s called), then give it permission to write whatever data you want.
