Apple Watch to require daily charging

Samsung made the mistake of launching the first Galaxy Gear watch when it was compatible only with a Samsung Note.

So if I understand correctly when the GG was released it was only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3?

At launch. It required extentions that was only found in Android 4.3 and the Note 3 was the first Samsung phone to have 4.3. When the other phones got their upgrades, they could also use the Galaxy Gear.

The first one was. Just like the same way the Apple watch is compatible with only the iphone6 (afaik). However, since then all the new gears, including the gear2 works with all top Samsung devices.

The apple watch is compatible with the 5, 5s, 5c as well as the upcoming 6 range. I'm not sure why the 4s didn't make the grade as it has bluetooth 4.

EDIT - which would mean that the watch is compatible with 60% of all the iPhones being used today? http://www.cnet.com/news/iphone-5-ipad-2-still-most-popular-models-says-report/

While Apple may have the battery issues and it would seem that it's a pretty big issue, they most certainly haven't released it being compatible with only one device. It's backwards compatible all the way to the iPhone 5.

I don't know much about the Samsung watch but from what I gather Apple have gotten far more right here. Continuity/Handover, Apple Pay, App Ecosystem and they were gracious enough not to include a camera.

I'm always weary when Apple claims something works throughout a few ranges - they lie quite a bit when it comes to compatibility that you're forced to Google and read the fine print to see what actually works.

You shouldn't be weary of this. The tether connection and continuity requires Bluetooth LE and WiFi Direct. The iPhone 5 is the first iPhone with both these technologies.
 
I'm weary because of their claims with iOS being available to everything - but limiting features on all devices due to age and limitations. I was excited when iOS6 was coming to my iPad - but the half the features I wanted were missing.

The best I could do was brag to my friends that I had iOS6 but - in reality - I knew everyone had a different flavour of iOS6. Just because it they say it's compatible and the About tab shows iOS6, hardly means much.

Anyhow - as mentioned earlier Samsung limited it to a single device at first because it required 4.3 as the Note was the first Samsung device with 4.3 When the others got 4.3, use was extended to the other phones. Not dissimilar to what Apple are doing tbh
