iPhone 4S doubles data consumption: study

Apple’s new iPhone 4S consumes on average twice as much data as the previous iPhone model and even more than iPad tablets due to increasing use of online services like the virtual personal assistant Siri, an industry study showed.

Industry study is wrong. Siri uses 64Kb per request, so if you double your data by that alone you really have no life.

I guess that's what happens when you use cloud computing?

Then again looking at what the company does for a living that released the study, I would take that data with a pinch of salt.

Optimizing wireless network performance
Mobile operators are facing challenges like never before - bandwidth hungry applications combined with unlimited data tariffs and exponential traffic growth, 4G deployment and parallel 3G optimization also tight budgetary constraints and slowing penetration growth combined with ever more demanding subscribers. Leading Operators know they must innovate to survive - legacy tools, processes and business models will not suffice.
Arieso has been working with many of the world's largest mobile operators to tackle emerging problems head on - from improving iPhone performance over GSM and UMTS, to LTE planning, even preparing networks for the world's attention during events such as FIFA 2010. Arieso solutions put both the customer and the shareholder at the centre of the network, ensuring efficient deployment of Capital Expenditure where and when needed while delivering outstanding network performance to reduce churn and increase revenues.

Indeed. If they are going to say the 4S uses more data because of iCloud, then the data usage of the 4 and 3GS would have doubled too.

Not 100%

They relate the numbers to studies done in the past. So when they did a study on say the 3G iCloud did not exist. Remember they did not go back an redo the tests on 3G with iOS 4+ installed and even if they did, not all users upgrade their phones.

Supporting users with older phones one of my biggest problems is people not updating. Back in the Windows help desk days I use to answer the phone in true "Did you reboot your PC" style, I have now changed to "Did you update your phone"

Seems a perfectly normal progression. I would say 50% of the apps installed on my device use the internet. Skype, Whatsapp, Viber, Dropbox, Teamviewer, Flipboard, Atomic web, Maps, Photobucket, Shazam, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo messenger...

New, so-called small cell technologies enable operators to use tiny, almost personal base stations which cost around R808.65 ($100) to remove mobile data traffic from the big base stations which serve hundreds or thousands of clients around them.

This gave me an idea:
Vodacom already has Vodacom Business ADSL uncapped accounts, that are resold by the likes of OpenWeb.
Why don't they sell these accounts directly to consumers, with a router that is capable of providing a 3G connection as well?

It could give them a wireless last mile extension via ADSL.
That would benefit people like me, because the reception over my house is pathetic, no matter which wireless service provider I use. I'm guessing they all use the same high site that isn't high enough to get over the hill to cover my house.

Edit: I just realised as I posted this, they wouldn't provide such a service because they would rather charge more for cellular data :(

It's like comparing internet usage at home in 19voertsek on your 2800 baud modem to today on 3G/ADSL/fibre

I am in the same boat kinda...

My house is smac bang in the middle of 2 Vodacom cells that dont overlap properly so if there is any kind of breathing I lose connection. and I get one tower on one side of my house and the other on the other side with nothing in the middle(where my desk is).

Its such a pain that even if I wanted to I can not use specials like the R500 for 20 gig or so on.

Something like that would help me as well

We just complete a successful Femto-Cell trail where we install what basically is a small base station in the house and backhaul it via ADSL. This allows you to then make 3G calls over your ADSL line.

Can't give dates yet but this would work well in situations like yours and Elimental's.

Why don't you stick a high-gain external antenna up in the meantime? You should see a much better signal and thus better throughput as well.

This sounds promising.
Does the base station used in the trial depend on an ADSL router already being present or is it connecting directly to the ADSL line itself?
If it connects directly to the ADSL line, does it also have ethernet ports so that I can replace 1 device and still manage all connections from that one device.
At the moment I have an ADSL modem that has 4 ethernet ports + wifi, all I would really need is the added femto cell functionality

Their statement is that the iPhone 4S doubles data usage. That is not true, as the Siri component does not add any meaningful data usage that you do not get on the iPhone 4 or 3GS running the same firmware.

Meh....

Data is data, and I don't see how the 3G can use less data than the 4S - If the 4S is using more data, then the owner of the 4S is using data apps on his phone more than the owner of the 3G model.....simple.

Data consumption is like a hosepipe in your garden - you will use more water if you water your lawn every day, fill your pool, wash your car 4 times a day. You will use less if you simply used your hosepipe to wash your car only, and then to only wash it once a month.

Maybe it's a novelty thing - the new owners of the 4S, are still in the excited phase - using their 4S every 5 seconds to run various apps that use data

Care to explain more?
- What is a "3G Call"?
- Would we need to buy bundles...I mean, are you talking about a "box" that provides 3G in your house?

Sounds like it. How secure?

yeah but if it is, why would anyone even WANT to use it?

I mean, if Vodacom provides this magic little box that is backhauled by ADSL, why in the name of micky mouse must the person pay R200 for a GB, or R2 per MB using it as 3G?

Basically, If the person can physically get ADSL into his house, why should he pay Wireless prices?

Who said you must use it for 3G Data?

Well I assumed, since this thread is about Data Consumption, You were talking about Backhauling it through ADSL, and you said it would benifit Mouse and elimentals, who were talking about, you guessed it, Data.

If this ADSL backhauled thing isn't used for Data, what is the main use....."3G Calls"?

Yup, that's what I said. Shockingly more people use mobile networks for voice than data.;)

These Femto cells are becoming very popular globally to fill in coverage holes.
