Aramex global shopper

They just hit my account for R187 duties on a gift. 1st and last time I use them.

You ordered toys, you said earlier in this thread that the total amount after tax 492.00 ZAR. Customs will charge duty appropriately.
That duty has nothing whatsoever to do with Aramex Global Shopper. You will have been hit with the same duty, if not higher, if you had used DHL or even the post office.

Dhl is R150 just for clearance, last I used them. That is for R0 duties. Expecting not to pay duties after marking something a gift is retarded, just pay duties like a good citizen.

VISACHECKOUT1 works at checkout until the end of this month - obviously you would have to use a Visa card. Dunno what discount you get though as I haven't used it.

Isn't that the one that gives you a $1 for lifetime sub to AGS? I already got that for free, just need discount on an actual shipment.

Not quite correct, and no need to call anyone names. We are allowed to declare a small amount as a gift, under R400 a year methinks, but I could be wrong. I have successfully managed to declare something (value R350) as a gift at Cape Mail (the Cape Town post office hub).

I don't thing you can declare a gift using any courier though.

My attack was based on the fact that he declared something a gift, which clearly isn't, then moaning about paying duties after not getting away with his attempted fraud.

Woah, methinks you need coffee! How do you know it wasn't a gift? There was absolutely no harm in trying. It most certainly wouldn't be classified as fraud, especially as the amount was R492 - only R92 over the R400 barrier (there is no duty levied on items under R400).

so you assuming fraud based on what?
how do you know it wasn't a gift, maybe he doesn't know the rules and R400 limit, it looks like he got some toys not a state of the art laptop or something.

snap dee...nah i dont think coffee will help, maybe P924 is just a dick.

It wasn't a gift.

I am certainly not just a dick, sometimes I am an inconsiderate dick as well.

fair enough..i just dropped R3k duties elsewhere, so i can understand anyone trying to avoid them if possible, it is painful

"Please be advised that customs requested that we do formal clearance on all your shipments going forward". Darn it even my shipments below 500 are now getting stopped. Any tips on how to get off the "watch" list?

Straighten up and fly right?
There must be some reason why customs are watching you closely. All I can suggest is that your next couple of orders are things that don't get their attention. Hopefully there will be other names to put on the watch list and yours will drop off.

I experimented a bit and broke up a R2500 order into 6 shipments. They insist on an importers code now.

so get one, its not an issue

It is very hard to get an importers permit. SARS see very few people a day and concentrate on big businesses first. If you are an individual they look aghast at you, like why are you bothering???
As individuals, we pay our dues when we pay duty - SARS do not lose out, believe me.
Jack, rather keep your nose clean, and never again try and fool customs. It's like stepping on a snake and hoping it won't notice.

I actually applied for my code months back. No letter received so I called sars helpline. They say they can see my application is approved but cannot give me the code over the phone and I must send a letter to some address requesting the number. Sent letter and still no response. Now I got to go spend the day at their office tomorrow.

Importers code is easy: Fill out "DA 185" and "DA 185 4A1". Get certified bank statement, proof of address, proof of ID, verified telephone number (this was a problem for me as I have no home-line and am on pre-paid and needed an affidavit). Drop all of it off at SARS and wait.

I am at the waiting part as I asked my accountant to do the trip to Alberton SARS as the application and the collection of the code needs to be done in person. AFAIK, the code does not expire. I think the current limitation of 3(?) parcels per year is a joke if it is enforced - it's not like we do not pay VAT and duties, so no loss to SARS. I get the part that some people are importing goods not for personal use, but SARS continues to get their duties/taxes.

IMO it would be much better to just allow as many imports (of legal goods) and then properly tax. This will then at least re-balance the local market and offer more competitive pricing. As an example: Dell wanted to charge us 7K per 900GB SAS drive, we ordered them off Amazon and it worked out to 3,5K per drive. With this I do not even care if a drive fails and warranty is not honored, I just bought 4 for the same cost :-)

My shipment now says "Johannesburg, South Africa 02/08/2017 07:33 AM Shipment Update - shipment in vc sns". Wonder how much longer still.
