Archers custom chassis work log

Here is a small render of what the final (empty) product should look like. Sent the drawings off today for a quote.

czc - its a Seasonic X-750

Hmmmm, noice! :D

That is some serious PC pron right there :)

What is it going to be made of btw? I know "metal", but what specifically :p

2mm aluminium. Could actually have reduced some of the panels to 1mm but I felt like being 100% sure that my case would be built to last. Perhaps on my next build I'll drop the non essentials to 1mm. Chose aluminium cause its way lighter than steel obviously. Having said that though my case is still going to reach 9kg empty (roughly the same as the Cooler Master 690ii)

There is also one 2mm steel panel in there, needed a magnetic material for the dust filter to attach to.

Awesome, sounds good to me! What are the case dimensions?

How long is the build time?

Dimensions are 565 (D) x 485 (H) x 200 (W). In terms of total volume its actually smaller than the 690ii!!

Hoping build time will be two weekends. Really shouldnt take longer than that since I dont need to cut the panels, only the framework. But getting all the bolts etc lined up exactly before I start drilling is going to take long. Dont want any mistakes.

Efficient space management FTW!

How much of the build is being done by yourself? In terms of actual cutting, shaping, drilling etc?

Well the entire design from scratch is by me. Went and looked up on ATX specs for motherboard spacing, PSU sizes, fan specs etc etc, made 3D models of everything, and put everything in to make sure everything clears ok.
Cutting the panels I had to do by laser since there is no way I was going to do the 200+ hexagons by hand! :wtf: So I added in all the holes that needed to be drilled as well, so I know they will be in the right place too. Adds almost nothing to the cost of having it laser cut so I added them in. The frame I'll be doing myself, to make sure the panels fit snugly. The place I bought the aluminium bar from could only guarantee 1mm tolernace which is not enough. Also made sure the design does not need any bends which makes it easier for me as a first time modder :p

And quote for the laser cutting is back and isnt over what I thought it would be :D So thats a go

Dust filters arrived today :D will put up some pics when I get home and also try test how well they work (dust filtered vs restriction to airflow)

Ah I see, thats awesome! Holy cow, this has been a lot of work by the sounds of things. I wish I had the time/knowhow/ability/patience to undertake a project like this, but I have none of those qualities haha! Looking forward to watching this badboy being built! :D

Yeah, pics! :D

Gah, taking pics of just the filter is more difficult than it sounds. You guys will just have to wait until its on the case to see it. Review will follow once I've got fans up and running on the rig

Whats the filter like? Does it have a frame?

Go check out www.demciflex.com
Its a local guy who has them made, and 99% of his product actually goes to online stores overseas. Very well made stuff. Has a magnetic border so you dont need screws or anything to attach the filters. Makes it much easier to clean them regularly. I know with my current case its such a mission to clean the filters (that let half the dust in anyway, sigh) that I hardly ever do it

Suxorz :(

Do you have an airflow meter or something similar to test with btw?

Uhmmm...

I tried looking at the pics in a previous post.. can you maybe move them to another hosting site? Said it was blocked =/

Awesome! Can't wait to see everything come together :)

That velvet PSU bag is very sexy :p

Imageshack was blocked? Weird. Will move pics over to MyBB at some stage then

@Ono, no airflow meter. Might try the plastic bag trick though

I love what you are doing here, it is fascinating :) Hopefully someday when I am out of school and have enough money and time, I will be able to undertake a project like this. Keep up with the updates! ;)

Laser cutting got done today, so I have all the panels that will be making up the case. Expect photos tonight or tomorrow :D

lol I think we should ban Archer from posting in here if he doesn't supply us with pics in each subsequent post :p
