I've damaged my connector and use it for charging my S3 - so I need to buy another. But lots of Google links pointed to the cable effecting charging time etc ... Not sure how accurate they are?

Can I just buy any one?

The connectors are the same, but the chargers aren't. All have different voltage regulation and surge protection.

They're all the same specification but the charger itself can make a difference. Most ones are pretty low quality.

I think it depends on the charger.
Any cell shop.

Blackberry use the same.
Any computer shop.

Yip only get a Samsung or Blackberry - the others could f-up your phone.

Yes and no.

Yes, almost every single one will charge your phone and the connector is the same.

No, not all chargers are equal. Through personal experience, using low-priced and low-quality chargers can have a very small chance of damaging the handset - though highly unlikely.

More noticeably, the handset will often charge much slower using a generic - I found this to be suuuuuuuper slow with my S1 and S2 - talking like hours and hours.

Also found that a couple of generics emitted some sort of magnetic/static field that messed up the touchscreen while it was plugged in. Also sometimes gave off static shock when touching the cable :D

So ja, it's one of those times when its just worth paying the ridiculous 'official" BB or Samsung prices for a quality charger.

You can also just get a normal USB cable and use your computers USB port to charge your phone.

Just ask someone in a cell shop then if it's wrong you can take it back easier

yeah they the same , but external usb 2 hardrive usb ones are not :p

bought one from dx.com , fits perfectly cant pick up hdd , hdd does go on means it knows there is cable plugged in but cant use the HDD. ( wd elements 2tb)

sold my cable by mistake to someone , the drive is perfect.

I have the charger that plugs into the wall - it's just the USB micro cable that I damaged and need a new one.

Thanks for the replies!

I have read something about the S4 and maybe S3 USB cable being wired slightly differently compared to normal cables. There's a thread on XDA. I notice that the micro USB side of my S4 cable has the second from right pin missing, by design.
That said, my phone charges just fine with my Nexus 7 charger (also 2 Amp, 5 Volt output).

I think that is if you are using the microusb for video output (mhl I think its called). But for charging, it should be the same

I used my S3's cable and charger to charge my S4, because it was already plugged in.
Then I sold the S3 with the charger and usb cable.
Started to use the original S4 cable and charger and my charging time doubled, but my battery life almost doubled as well.

I would cut the cable below damaged point and solder a part from a good cable and use original charger.

Note: Connect not only +5V (red) and ground wire (black), but also twisted pair D+ D- wires. They might be wired together, but on Apple a specific resistance indicate maximum throughput of the charger. Don't know about Samsung implementation. Don't worry about shield, it is charging cable, not high speed data.

Sounds like you bought a charge only cable (2 wires) rather than a data cable (4 wires).
