Are firewalls still relevant?

It will be interesting to see the changes around firewalls when IPv6 becomes predominant as it has a lot of built-in security.

Who decided to call it a firewall (why not icewall, brickwall or something like that  ) ? And yes we need it !

The name comes from:

Firewall (construction), a barrier inside a building or vehicle, designed to limit the spread of fire, heat and structural collapse
Firewall (automobile), the part of the vehicle that separates the engine from the driver and passengers

I prefer firewalling a network. Stops bad things coming in to the network, and helps you in limiting certain outgoing protocols.

So, yes, a firewall will still be relevant to me. That's the only way you can protect your computers and other devices.

Firewalls are definitely still relevant and will be for many years to come. Its the only way to protect devices internally and externally.

Source and Destination muthertrucker!

Firewalls are VERY relevant still, and will stay that way for a very long time...
