A story on News24 this morning has stated that 1 in 5 South African men is a rapist.

One of the guys I work with insists that this is utterly impossible. I agree that the stats are pretty badly done (1300 people surveyed) and most likely don't reflect the reality. Then the guy said something interesting.

He believes that crime in SA is nowhere near as bad as we're given to believe. I on the other hand believe it's probably quite close.

Since these forums are a better representation (in some ways) of SAfricans, how many of you have been victims of crime?

And please don't make this about race or anything silly like that :)

I agree with him, but not in the case of violent crime, which lets face it, is the only type we hear about.

Yup! House burgled twice. One car swiped and two broken into!

These are my opinions. The government won't allow me anything else to go on!

Break-ins. Like I said before, fun.
 
Friend in hospital after armed robbery in his home last night

Severe concusion and many facial cuts.

He is an entrepreneur that will be without an income for quite a while.

Wife and 2 kids.

Friends and family already met and made firm pledges to support them. Wish we could get tax relief for this.

Thanks to those in government promoting criminal rights.

Your list will be much shorter if you ask who has not been affected by crime.

Two vehicles stolen.

Five breakins in two years.
 
Heard on 567 Cape Talk Radio that 1 in 16 people in this country has been a victim of violent crime in the last 3 years. That's quite alot, and these are only statistics based on reported crime. I bet there are plenty of unreported violent crime incidents, that if had been reported, would only make this figure even worse.

I have been mugged 3 times, burgled countless times, had my car broken into more than once and was way too close to a bank robbery in Rosebank that went wild west.

I really do love this country despite all of this. That's why I came back.
 
Mugged twice, once at knifepoint and once with mere superior numbers, in 2 different cities. Held up by gunmen in the bush north of pretoria while out rock climbing with friends. There are places I hesitate to go climbing now. Had someone walk into my home in a complex while I was in my bedroom, take my and my housemate's wallet and ID from the kitchen counter, and walk out without us noticing. Yes, I'm affected by crime.

To be specific, had the office attached to our house broken into in PE a few years ago, ADT caught the guy on the golf course behind us, he was eventually sentenced to 3 years after being linked to other crimes, so at least they got one. Not the smartest guy though, looked in the window to see what was going on and saw this guy helping himself to chocolate while the alarm siren was going off.

Was broken into in Grahamstown earlier this year, slept through it luckily. Been quite a few other breakins in the complex I stay in here, countless attempted breakins. Woke up a while ago to the sound of some genius trying to rattle my security gate till it magically opened, he was gone by the time armed response arrived though. Friend that I stay with here has had her car broken into twice, mine seems to have been left alone luckily. All happened this year.

The scary thing is this forum isn't representative of SA, we're probably less likely to be victims of crime due to our higher incomes and being able to live in better neighbourhoods, afford better security measures etc.
 
hijacked, mugged, car stollen, car broken into, death threats, pets killed, house broken into, shot at. all in a period of 2 years.
