Are you contributing to any charities?

I just visited the Eden benson home for kids in Durban and my heart broke. They take care of abandoned kids. An international fund organisation pulled the plug on their cause due to the world cup. It got me thinking and i asked myself " why don't i contribute any money towards worthy causes?"

So i am planning on starting to donate 1 % off my salary to a local organisation in my area. If we all , individuals and businesses start to help our local areas in which we live / trade we will start to move SA in the right direction.

Come on and lets get going guys! Screw government, they are useless and corrupt!

Let's try to start making the change ourselves. It will not happen overnight but knowing you are trying to make a difference is a start.

That's a start! I am part of a winter blanket drive in my company and we dropped off the blankets at eden benson home. but i haven't contributed anything on a personal level but that's about to change.

And thats one of the reasons why i hated the fact that we got to host the world cup. Foreign aid watches as the guvamant spends all the tax payers money on fancy new stadiums, when thousands of people dont have a place to stay or food, so what do they do? They say F U and leave.

I am all for charities, but why the EF (stronger word would be censored), does the guvamant not help out more, oh yes, cos they too busy enriching themselves.

Oh and this year i have given about R80k to "charity" so far in the form of home burglaries.

The company I work for is usually more than happy to give money away to charities, the proplem mostly arises when NPO certficates are requested. Call us corporates self serving if you will, but we have to show the auditors something.

Donate to us - we can give you gusy a Section 18a certificate. It's tax deductable!

If there is a way for me to deduct my donations from my tax I will donate as much as is legally allowed. Sadly, we are already paying so much tax that I simply cannot donate as well.

Not sure if the law on this changed, but if you donate to a registered charitable organisation with a fundraising no, etc. you are allowed to claim that donation as a tax deduction.

Silly example:
You pay R100 tax.
You donate R80 to said registered charity.
Can you claim the full R80 back and will you get full R80 back from SARS? Or will they say "we see you claim R80, but we will give you R10 back"?

Cause if I can get every cent back that I donate I will donate the friggen refund the moment I get it again

I praise all those that contribute to charities, but be very careful with your donations to make sure that it is going into the hands of the needy without some corrupt aholes filtering off a cut, if not the whole lot.
I've heard of a lowlife that sold old clothes to the needy, that other folks had donated.

Another sad part is that the poor people that the ANC turns their back on, will keep voting for them.

No, the R80 you give gets deducted from your taxable income which in turn reduces the amount of tax you should have paid, resulting in a reimbursment from SARS. (I think - I'm really not a tax guy at all)

You'll have to give credit to God for suggesting that 10% of everything we own should go to charitable causes, that was a masterclass.

The other day I had a beggar knock on the door clearly a drunk giving me a sob story. I made him work for his hand out for about 15 minutes questioning him about various aspects of his long intricate story he'd made up. Anyway gave him some clothes and some cash for his efforts.

hey guys please check with your local std bank branch when making donations to charity. i know they promised to match any contributions to charities (must be a valid charity). i'm not sure if this is still running or only running for staff members, if it's only for staff members then ask your branch manager to make they payment on your behalf so it can be matched by the bank. i hope it is still running and if it is i hope most forumites will take advantage of this.
