I am considering Argentina as a holiday destination.

Anyone ever traveled there? Any recommendations?

Thank you :)

I've heard really good things about BA... but it was mostly about the quality of the Argentinian women :)

I realise this is an old thread, but anyways...

SWAMBO & I are going to Argentina for 2 weeks in Dec. All the flights & accommodation are already paid up, can anyone recommend how much forex we should take?

Food and drink is not that expensive from what I remember and you get a lot for your money.
Portions for food are really big and they love meat!

You don't need a lot. I was in BA for a week a few years back. Food is relatively cheap, the portions are huge. Booze however is ridiculous. There is a popular Irish Bar near the cemetary in BA, and it was basically R300 for two tequilas and two beers.

Trips and transport are average prices, nothing too hectic.

Go see the Tango show.
Don't take the Ferry to Uruguay (its a complete waste), unless you go to Montevideo.
Eat lots of Meat and chimichurri.
Argentinians aren't very big on English, learn something before you go.

ZAR20K enough? That's about USD2.5K

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it.

Our itinerary is as follows:

BA - 3 nights
Iguazu Falls - 3 nights
Bariloche - 3 nights
El Calafate - 4 nights
back to BA for one night and then back to CTN

Ola amigos!

Just got back from 2 weeks in Argentina, thought I'd share some travel observations.

Travel notes about Argentina (in no particular order):
1. Argentines are very friendly and helpful to tourists
2. Argentines do 3 things well: coffee, ice cream, and Quilmes (my new favourite beer). Except for the bit about serving coffee with sparkling water - WTF?
3. Forget what you heard about their beef, even Spur puts their restaurants to shame
4. Food is generally bland and expensive. Everything in Argentina is overpriced, come to think of it, but the food is ridiculously expensive. You even get charged for 'table service', sometimes up to Ar$20 per person - WTF?
5. The wine is not bad, but again, ridiculously expensive
6. Patagonian lamb is really good, about as good as Karoo lamb
7. A 4-star hotel in Argentina is about on the same level as a run-down 2- or 3- star hotel in SA
8. Punctuality is not in the Argentine vocabulary
9. If you are flying internationally out of Buenos Aires, get to the airport at least 5 hours before your departure time. The airport seems to be run by 5yr olds - expect long queues and little order
10. The national pastime in Argentina is littering
11. It's a beautiful country but it's BEEEG - you need lots of time to see it properly
12. You MUST see Iguazu Falls and the glaciers in Patagonia before you die!
13. Drink some Mate while you're there, you might actually like it

Oh, turned out we took only US$1500 and that was not enough. Ended up doing the last few days on credit cards, probably an extra $1000 or so.

And I forgot to also say this: don't fly business class, you'll never be able to face cattle class again!

Your pics of Buenos Aires Aires look a lot like mine.
Buenos Aires is huge.
I found through Andes Mountains to Chile is beautiful if you go by the road. The valleys there in summer and spring is green and peaceful reminds me of Heidi in die Berge.

1. Argentines are very friendly and helpful to tourists
I find the language gap is quite big although in Buenos Aires more people compared to other Latin America countries can at least understand English.
2. Argentines do two 3 things well: coffee, ice cream, and Quilmes (my new favourite beer). Except for the bit about serving coffee with sparkling water - WTF?
I did drink Quilmes. Have already forgotten how it tastes.
I find they are a tea drinking country which is very popular amongst teenagers strangely enough. In SA a teenager won't get caught dead in public drinking tea.
3. Forget what you heard about their beef, even Spur puts their restaurants to shame
I agree their meat does not taste good and is expensive.
4. Food is generally bland and expensive. Everything in Argentina is overpriced, come to think of it, but the food is ridiculously expensive. You even get charged for 'table service', sometimes up to Ar$20 per person - WTF?
Agree there. Near tourists areas especially.
5. The wine is not bad, but again, ridiculously expensive
I didn't find wine expensive but then again I bought some wine back to SA but I got it in a supermarket in Mendoza.
6. Patagonian lamb is really good, about as good as Karoo lamb
Didn't eat lamb
7. A 4-star hotel in Argentina is about on the same level as a run-down 2- or 3- star hotel in SA
Agree. The middle of the road hotels I find cramped.
8. Punctuality is not in the Argentine vocabulary
To some extent
9. If you are flying internationally out of Buenos Aires, get to the airport at least 5 hours before your departure time. The airport seems to be run by 5yr olds - expect long queues and little order
Must have been because of December. I didn't get any queue when arriving 3 hours for my flight.
10. The national pastime in Argentina is littering
I enjoyed all the city parks i didn't find littered. The graffiti on all the monuments was more of a pain as it spoils photos and there is a LOT of graffiti in Argintina.
11. It's a beautiful country but it's BEEEG - you need lots of time to see it properly
Agree it is huge.
12. You MUST see Iguazu Falls and the glaciers in Patagonia before you die!
Unfortuantely I was there on work so didn't see neither.
13. Drink some Mate while you're there, you might actually like it
Never heard of it.
