Armed gang robs creche

People Garankuwa is not a some rural village with no power. It is a town just like Pretoria. There are banks electricity and even running water.
// Shock horror!!!!
Thank you. *sigh*
Nowadays you hardly find a township without a mall or at least a shopping complex with all the accompanying amenities.

For you and everybody else who is deluded on this matter.

Article doesn't say where in Garankuwa. BTW from garankuwa to mabopane or soshanguve - you need to take 2 x taxis (+-R12 per trip)/taxi = R48 in total just to deposit how much exactly? . From garankuwa to any shops around there you need to take 1 x taxi anyway. Which is +-R20 bucks wasted

*Sigh* so you are basically saying people in townships don't have access to banks?

No, I'm saying sometimes its an inconvenience to go all the way to the bank - while the creche is within walking distance.

BTW I live in a township

What happened to cellphone banking and e-wallets? Last i fiddled with this, it was made for exactly this sort of scenario, sending money via airtime/phone to each others e-wallets , it doesn't even need internet, works via USSD . The final recipient can then go to the bank and withdraw/transfer it to other accounts/cash.

...we always hear how cellphones are everywhere and i bet everyone in a township got one, yet then they don't use it?

Robbed crèche still hoping to go on school outing

Paul Herman, News24

Pretoria - The director of a nursery school robbed by an armed gang says he is still hoping to take the children on a planned outing, despite robbers making off with the R40 000 required to make the trip.

Kiddies Ark director, Odo Ratshivhomvela, told News24 on Wednesday that he did not plan to abandon their school trip to Aventura Warmbaths, despite the robbery at the Pretoria nursery school earlier this week.

On Monday, three armed men entered the crèche in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria at around 15:00, and demanded to speak to the supervisor, Ratshivhomvela said.

A teacher, who did not want to be named when contacted by News24, said she did not want the children to see gun-wielding men robbing the crèche.

She stood in front of the men and pleaded with them not to harm the children, Pretoria News reported on Wednesday.

The robbers then calmly allowed staff to lock up the children in one room, before locking up staff in another.

They left the premises with R40 000 in cash, and also made off with cellphones and laptops.

Trip to Aventura Warmbaths

The large sum of money had been collected at a cost of R260 per child for an excursion to Aventura Warmbaths in Bela Bela, Limpopo, scheduled for Thursday.

The teacher said the men knew what they were looking for, having asked directly for the supervisor, who handles the finances at the crèche.

"My staff is currently traumatised and aren't in the right frame of mind to speak to the media," Ratshivhomvela said.

"I am currently trying my best to provide trauma counselling. I’m hoping someone can help with this."

Ratshivhomvela said he has yet to receive a case number for the robbery, but won’t let the ordeal halt plans to treat the children to a day out.

"We’ve raised the expectations of the kids and we don’t want to disappoint them. We are trying to stretch every cent in the house, so we are going," he said defiantly.

Gauteng police said a case of robbery was being investigated, but no arrests had been made.

CAers gonna CA.

Unless you've lived in a township with no car for a long time (several months to years) you may have a hard time understanding how things are for someone living there.

I think living 32yrs in a township (both JHB & PTA townships) kinda puts me in that bracket as well?

Insane! I hope they catch the guys. Someone always knows something. Its very hard to hide stolen money (spending habits always give you away)

+1, check who's buying rounds at the local tavern.
