Article: 10 000 drunk drivers arrested

More than 5.5 million vehicles and drivers have been checked, 2.3 million fines issued, at least 10 000 drunk drivers arrested and more than 24 000 un-roadworthy vehicles discontinued from use over the past four months.

5.5 million vehicles and drivers checked, 2.3 million fines..............

Insurance premiums must be high. I wonder what the gender breakdown is ? ;)

I understand this is good news but I am more concerned with convictions.
South Africans love getting into trouble and getting out of it.
We need 10 000 convictions, I doubt many will be convicted.

It would be nice if the death penalty is brought back - if you drive under the influence, you can kiss your ass goodbye...

Personally I feel that this is just a waste of our tax money.

This is nothing to brag about. We have a better chance of getting shot/robbed/fired then being killed in a road accident in this country of ours. Spend my tax money in improving our society in this country. The better the society is! The less chances one will be shot/robbed/fired or in this case in a car accident. A good society will be less prone to alcohol.

So yea I say this is just a waste of my/our tax money. For it's not solving any problems.

I think we have the most highest deaths in Africa for car accidents.

Yup, my drunk driving case is coming up in April. Uuugh, what a schlep.
I guess I should be glad that the whole Police arrest etc. scenario went more or less quite professional. Hats off to those officers who had to spend about 2 hours filling in all the paper work so I could get my hungover ass back home on a Sunday morning. :D
Oh, and to the only other whitey who spent the night in jail with me amongst all the other race groups, you were a typical whiney little Joburg bitch and sometimes I think it's no wonder the -mostly- racist cops struggle to keep their racist tendencies in check... siesman, groei bietjie ballas.

Be prepared... my one mate got like a year of counseling...it could happen to you :)

Good, but 10000 is still too little for a few months. Set up roadblocks near all the hotspots and arrest more of these swine. I've seen countless numbers of them stumble their ways out of pubs and clubs in the Fourways area and step into their cars.

They're arrested and need to post bail. Upon doing so they'll need to appear in court to prove their innocence. Most don't have the means and time to do so, and just admit guilt and pay the fine. The difference is they walk away with a criminal record.

I wish this country had a proper public transport system, where one can just step out of your gate, signal a cab to take you to your favorite drinking spot, later when you are 'happy' stumble out, signal another cab to take you home, without spending double what you had spend on your night out.

Plus a cheapish one

I know how the justice and legal system works.
They are not always given bail depending on the individual's situation and the details surrounding the crime, for example most of the time, when arresting someone for drinking and driving, the 2nd charge is reckless and negligent driving. This is done so in case the drunk driving charge is not help up or there is no conviction on this.

Admitting guilt is not enough and IMO their cars should be forfeited to the state.
The law makes provision for this.
What we need are mobile courts at the roadblocks.

The whole drunk driving thing is bs..

South Africa is a drinking nation.

What do you expect people to do? -A short drive home is almost R100 via an excuse for a taxi service.
It's cheaper to stay in a back packers ffs.

People who call for the death penalty? w..t..f..

Death penalty is a bit extreme. But get a designated driver if you intend on going out and don't want to pay for a taxi. There's really no excuse.

I have a messed up arm, because of a drunk driver - I must live with it for the rest of my life.

Yes. Yes, we are...real men drink and drive hey?

Have three drinks less and it's paid for...

Not people. Me. I called for the death penalty. I stand by my statement...it's called pre-emptive culling. If I had the means I would kill that drunk bastard that skipped the red light and drove into me.

Oh, and if you are just trolling...I fell for it...
