Edit: R/Sgt, we took a ton of abuse on a daily basis but because we were a private service, we had to take it and deal with it professionally (as a shift super, I had to handle irate callers). The amount of prank calls were also astronomical as we had an 0800-number and there was basically nothing we could do about it (except perhaps try and report it to the Police).
I worked as a shift supervisor in a private emergency call centre as few years ago. There was one overall goal and that was to correctly service every call that came through without exception. We had targets to meet wrt x% dropped calls, time from phone ringing until dispatch of vehicles etc.
Our salaries were impacted by the performance we delivered and that is something that government would never be able to do (think Unions).
