Article: 10111 emergency line hangs up on caller

How long wold they take to react? When the deal was done and the criminals gone? 10111 is there for a reason and that is not for a lazy fat brainless cow answering the phone to decide. They should patch you to the appropriate reaction unit.

And if it wasn't a drug deal? Huge waste of everyone's time. I would rather they build intelligence around cars/people/registration numbers/areas.

And if it wasn't a drug deal?

And what if it was even worse than drugs?
Perhaps plotting a murder?

It's a gamble either way - but it's not up to the call center operator to decide or swear/insult the caller. As mentioned, she should put it through and let the actual cops decide ... there may have been a van around the block that would take a few minutes to double check.

Crazy stuff. One has to dig deep to find a government employee that actually gives a f uck. Sad state of affairs.

I found one of those the other day. I called the cops regarding a potential scam and was directed towards another unit. I got through to an extremely helpful bloke who chatted with me about the incident (on a very understanding level) for about 20 minutes. He came across as if he wanted to help and he did all that he could subsequently to do so. I must say that I've had my good and bad experiences with the cops but as much as it takes one bad apple to ruin the box, it can take one inspirational employee to motivate others.

This article highlights the levels of polarisation in the cops though and means that we need better management, better levels of standardisation and a far better training programme...

What number did you use?

My experience with 10111 was quite pleasant, although I don't know whether they did send out a van as they said they would since the drunk driver already left his crashed bakkie...supposedly they can't do anything if the guy isn't still in the drivers seat of the vehicle.

A sense of security has an awful lot to do with how you feel. The plods responding to a false alarm isn't about wasting everyone's time - it actually reassures greatly knowing that if you call someone will come.

Good point, but as some member shave previously mentioned it really depends on who you get through to that makes all the difference. I assume all calls are recorded so it should be easy to see where the problem areas are.

My experience when dialling 10111 was a complete joke. The situation was about as dire as it gets and the phone was going engaged after ringing. I couldn't believe what was happening.

Thankfully, on that occasion, I had the local cop shop's number at hand and they were pretty quick to respond.

Hi guys

10111 is the primary contact center for all emergencies requiring the police, It controls all of the working vehicles within a town or area Be they shift, dog unit, flying squad, TRT, POPS etc

They received the call, take down the details and then pass the info onto the dispatcher who will contact the relevant vehicle/s

The first line of response is the shift vehicles who operate from a specific station which covers a specific area, they are responsible for all incidents within their area. (They can respond to incidents in bordering areas depending on how close they are and what type of incident it is)

Your specialized unit will only be called out for serious crimes in progress such as robbery, murder, rape, housebreaking, hostage, riots etc, however you shift vehicle will be the primary responder for all these incidents

When a operator contacts a vehicle they will class the complaint as follows
A- In progress
B – Recently occurred
C – Occurred a while ago

Now this is where the main problem comes in, if you have incompetent operators and dispatchers then the vehicles get the wrong info, I had plenty of that over the years where an A complaint becomes a C, The address is wrong, the type of complaint is wrong (Housebreaking becomes disturbance of the peace), As result the responders look like incompetent idiots.

Also due to the number of incidents that vehicles have to respond to they will do the most urgent first and the others as they get a chance, this is often where people who have been burgled complain if you take a long time to get to them. There may also only be 2 vehicles to cover the area and some nights you don’t stop running, plus when you are dealing with one you are out of contact for anything from 10 minutes to 4 Hours depending on the incident

A friend of mine worked in the call center and some of the things she told us were scary, operators bring blankets and pillows so they could nap under their desk, ignoring call because they were on a personal call, not answering during breaks etc

If people receive bad service from 10111 they should report it and follow up.

However you must also bear in mind that many callers who are experiencing an incident, or who have just experienced one are often not able to relay the needed info, but the operators must be trained to deal with these situations, but many aren’t.

Operators and dispatchers must be highly trained in their job as they are the first line of contact and when they stuff up, it has a ripple effect often with deadly consequences

If people receive bad service from 10111 they should report it and follow up with the commander.

I wonder how many prank calls they get these days, RSG/T have you ever been called out to a prank call?

That is an emergency number for people to phone when they are under attack or need assistance.... I hope they arrest him for phoning in a prank like that.

I have been out on plenty most were harmless minor things, but then you got the ones that required fast response murder, rape, armed robbery, housebreaking and shootings

We got a call from control for any vehicles shooting in progress at a block of flats, all available vehicles responded since this is a high priority incident, it required a high speed response and on arrival it was fangs out only to find no shooting, the residents thought it quite strange when 5 vehicles pulled up and guys jumped out with guns drawn. This incident is dangerous as high speed responses carry a inherent risk of MVA’s and at the scene you are on a hair trigger so there is always the potential that something could go wrong

Emergency services (such as ER24) have the same issues with prank calls - I think we got alot more prank calls than SAPS because SAPS are 'super' serious with regards to prank calls... EMS services also take it more seriously, but not as serious as say, SAPS.

hahaha, ye. I had to do this once. had an accident where truck reversed up onto the car of a friend of mine, while we were in the car on the street. Luckily there were bystanders that shouted at him to stop because the tit actually revved the car up to get over the apparent obstacle that supposedly was no there 10 seconds ago when he was driving forward along the road.

No injuries luckily, but we needed the cops out to take a report. I phoned the local copshop 5 times, each time being put through to a number that rang and rang, then cut off. Once I actually heard the phone receiver get picked up and then dropped down immediately. By the 6th time, I phoned and shouted, help help RAPE, to the reception. I was immediately put through and answered within 2 seconds.

Some may say that I am pushing the boundaries there of misleading the cops or something. But you need to ask yourself, who is at fault here. The person that needs to go to extreme measures to simply get a normal police response. Or the system that forces that hand?

Did you just do that to get the operators attention and then tell them it was an accident or did you carry on that it was a rape?

If you carried through that it was a rape I would have kicked your ass when I got to the scene

You only really need cops at an accident scene if there are injuries, death, drunken driver, reck and neck driver or multiple cars (3+)

In your case you didn’t need them; you should have exchanged details, got witnesses details and written a brief description of the scene. You would then have to report it within 24 hours at your local station. From your description it was a pure accident and you would only need a Accident report for your insurance

The operators in this case should have been taken to task as this was unacceptable behavior on their part
DJ...
As long as it not for something stupid
A good one would be a trespasser in your yard, call it through as a housebreaking in progress
But if you find your house was broken into while you were out, don’t call and say it is in progress as there may be another priority incident that the vehicle must respond to.
I have worked in the past; where we were the only shift vehicle on the air and as a result we were running three complaints behind and as a result the less serious ones got pushed back, you can only do so much not that you get much sympathy from the public when you try and explain the reason for the delay

A good example of operator incompetence is the below

We were working one night a got a domestic violence call, but they didn’t say it was urgent etc

We were bored so we decided to respond to it as an Alpha complaint (shocking isn’t it)

As we pulled up a women came running out the house screaming that her son was killing his father, we ran in and found the son in the bedroom busy strangling his father with a shirt.

We dive tackled the son, but we could hardly hold him down, we sprayed him, cuffed him and then moved him to the van, it took both of us to get him into it and that was after been pepper sprayed, we left the cuffs on, but he then proceed to kick the door so hard that he bent the bottom piece up.

It turns out he had just been released from a psychiatric unit and had taken his pill while drinking and gone nuts

If we had followed the operators lead, we would have had a murder case to deal with.

Bad operators and dispatchers are a bloody menace as their incompetence can result in injury and death etc
