Article: 14 miners shot in the back

Fourteen of the 34 Lonmin platinum miners killed by the police in August were shot in the back, a judicial inquiry into the Marikana shooting heard on Monday.

"All fatal projectile wounds were sustained from the back," advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza told the Farlam commission at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, North West.
 
Yip, maybe do not run to attack a group of armed cops and then when your buddies get killed, you turn to run away, while bullets have already been fired.
No sympathy from me.
 
Would it make a difference if they were shot in the face? So it's ok to start kak and take a bullet, as long as you're facing said bullet?

CONDUCTING THIS SPEECH AT A MEMORIAL SERVICE, SURELY YOU WILL CAUSE HATE AND MORE RESISTANCE AGAINST THE POLICE.

“Ntsebeza said the police had claimed the mineworkers charged at officers because they had taken muti (traditional medicine) which made them feel invincible. This was the police's justification for killing them.”

THESE CLAIMES THAT THE MINEWORKERS UNDERWENT THEIR WITCH DOCTOR MUTI SEREMONY IS TRUE. FILMED BY THE POLICE HELICOPTER AND ACKNOWLEDGED BY BOTH THE SANGOMA AND OTHER SEREMONY PARTICIPANTS.

“Ntsebeza agreed it was the police's job to disarm people and disperse gatherings, and that the way they had done so in Marikana was not legitimate.”

HOW? THE POLICE COULD NOT EVEN ESTABLISH VERBAL CONTACT WITH THESE MINEWORKERS.

"SAPS officers on the scene must have known workers were not under the control of the unions... This was a public order issue, not a labour issue," said Ntsebeza.

BOTH A PUBLIC AND LABOUR ISSUE, YES MALEMA CAUSED VARIOUS WORKER UPRISINGS AND THE LABOUR UNIONS WERE INVOLVED.

“It appeared the police had not given the mineworkers an official order to disperse, but rather an ultimatum, and had encircled and entrapped the protesters with barbed wire.”

NOT TRUE, THE INVESTIGATORS ESTABLISHED A SAFE ROUTE FOR THE WORKERS TO DISPERSE IN, EXCEPT THAT SOME OF THEM USED THESE ROUTED TO CIRCLE (OSKOP-BEWEGING) THE POLICE.

“Blocking the miners' dispersal route to Nkaneng informal settlement... [they] had no choice but to move in numbers towards police with nowhere else to go," he said.”

AS ABOVE, THE MINEWORKERS WERE NOT TRAPPED AS ESTABLISHED. MOVE IN NUMBERS? YES, TO MOVE AGGRESSIVELY AGAINST THE POLICE.

AND MORE NONSENSE IN BETWEEN…

Mr. Dumisa Ntsebeza, I know that you are presenting your clients in this case but you are a complete liar and is only part of the downfall of our (all SA citizens) beloved country. Please go back to law school, there were no ultimatum and where did you see the police threatening the mineworkers? This was the other way around.

Yep, the commission's agenda will quickly become clear. The fact that they were shot in the back means nothing, it would be a natural reaction to run away when gunshots start firing, but it does not preclude the possibility (a) that you were armed or (b) that you were among other armed people and that they actually used such arms! The commission might however make it looks like these were innocents who were mercilessly shot in the back.

Any ANC "commission" is some kind of way to steal money and make it look official.
This was never going to be impartial. This was never done to get to the truth. This was a political move.

Yep. The spin has been decided already. Just to rubber stamp it and make sure the gullible public buy into it. Of course the media is doing a sterling job of helping things along.

We all know that if you face the shooter you have a much better chance of dodging the bullet ... :whistle:

This is going to turn into one of the biggest mud-slinging and finger pointing exercises this country has seen in a long while. The opening comments by the legal teams already suggest epic blame shifting.

Legal teams;
FAMILIES: The police just wanted to kill people. They were pissed and shot the miners.
NUM: We told them to just chillax but those miners were just soooooo naughty… Oh, have we mentioned that we’re actually the ones being targeted?
LRC/BMF: Let’s be nice and polite about this whole thing. It not so much the police’s fault as those who TOLD the police to do it.
LONMIN: Strictly speaking we weren’t there. Strictly speaking we weren’t in control of that area. Strictly speaking we’re just gonna keep quiet, ok?
POLICE: Listen, it’s everybody’s fault (except ours, of course). If everyone else did their jobs then we would certainly not have HAD TO shoot those people.

I really wonder if anything constructive will come from this. I hope so.

I really hope that you're wrong, but then I read an article like this and despair at this whole thing being so emotionally charged. I sympathise with most people affected by the killings, but should we allow sympathy (and the calls for sympathy) to hamper what is in essense a legal matter?

This whole commission being a fact-finding body worries me. I would have felt a lot better if I knew they were out to prove/disprove something concrete.


EDIT: Ah, and now the Bapo Ba Mogale royal family has something to say too. Will this commission entertain anyone who feels agrieved?
