Article: 4G not really so fast

Despite claims from mobile phone carriers, the next generation of mobile technology, or 4G, will only be slightly faster than current 3G speeds, at least initially.

Unbundle the wireless loop, and force operators to share the towers, backhaul, and infrastructure. There should only be one implementation of 4G/LTE. There's no point for Cell C, Telkom, MTN and Vodacom to all invest billions to do the exact same thing with little financial benefit. They should all either club together to cut costs, or ICASA should enforce it through regulations. That way they can really spend on backhaul, and bring us a solid LTE/4G implementation, and improve Cell Tower density to decrease the strain on each individual tower.

I believe the UK is doing something very similar. They recently REMOVED thousands of duplicated cell towers once the operators started sharing towers and infrastructure.

Sadly, with ICASA running at African pace, this will only happen by 2020, and thats being optimistic.

Ceullular Internet is only for those poor Shmoes who can't get ADSL or for ADSL backup. :D
