Ja, I heard some of the private and commercial pilots complaining about this on Wednesday on the radio. They said they had no prior warning as to the extent of this... and it is going to cost them millions in extra fuel, time, lost sales and contracts, etc.

Yeah it sucks.
No recreational aviation for more than a month.

No cops watching the 100's of crop sprayer strips in Cape towns airspace.
So take off and fly under 100 feet agl and nobody will spot you.

Not true Private Pilots have known about these plans for a while. Look at Avcom.
 
Air restrictions during matches leave charters furious

Air restrictions around World Cup matches have angered private charter companies who said on Thursday they could lose millions of rands in business.

Unscheduled flights have to apply for special permission to fly within 50km of Soccer City between 12:30 and 6:30 on Friday.

The air restrictions were recently extended with the no-go zone doubling in size.

One air charter operator said, “It is absolutely ludicrous. It is going to cost people millions literally. The logistical nightmare that this is causing is unbelievable.”

But the police’s Sally de Beer said the restrictions are part of the security plan.

“This is a general measure. It’s not because of any specific threat but we just want to make sure that the airspace is clear,” she said.

If they feel its necessary for security and to avoid a 911 like event so be it..

Subject: SWC Procedures and other changes for VFR traffic at FACT
Following affective from 3 June 2010 till PERMANENT:-

1. Centralised Aeronautical Information Management Service Centre (AIM):
Refer to AIP SUPPL S051/10
As from 3 June 2010 ATC flight plans can only be filed in the following ways:

a) phone call to the Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) Service Centre
on the share-call number 0860 FLY NOW (0860 359 669). From any Telkom-line
this is billed as a local call.

b) on the ATNS file2fly website https://file2fly.atns.co.za/aes/login.jsp. Users
must register (free) to utilize this site.

c) fax to the AIM Service Centre on 011 928 6514. The fax must still be followed
up approximately 5 minutes later with a phone call to 0860 FLY NOW to establish
that the flight plan has been received correctly.

d) from outside South Africa by phone on +27 11 928 6518.
Local ATS centres will not accept flight plans after 3 June 2010.
Flight plans may be filed up to 6 days in advance, and should be filed 4 to 6 hours
in advance to aid ATNS in traffic planning. Pilots must allow a minimum of 30
minutes for the flight plan to be entered into the system before requesting
departure or arrival slots from 011 928 6433 (CAMU), if necessary.

2. Standard VFR Traffic routes and operations within FACT CTR:
Refer to AIP SUPPL S054/10 – following routes may be used by ATC during busy periods

When Runway 01 in use:-
Bottelary 01 departure – Climb to 1500ft routing via University of Western Cape –
R300/Voortrekker road interchange – north of Kuilsriver golf course – remain north
of Bottelary Road towards Devon Valley till clear of CTR

Kenilworth 01 departure – Climb to 1500ft routing north of Guguletu Vlei towards
northern point of Kenilworth till clear of CTR

Bottelary 01 arrival – Once issued with BOTTELARY 01 ARRIVAL route from
vicinity of northern slopes/Devon Valley south of Bottelary Road - south of Kuilsriver
golf course – Blackheath Industrial to right downwind abeam Threshold RWY 34

Kenilworth 01 arrival – Once issued with KENILWORTH 01 ARRIVAL route from
vicinity south of Kenilworth - south of Guguletu Vlei – left downwind abeam ATC
Tower

When Runway 19 in use:-
Bottelary 19 departure – Climb to 1500ft routing via Blackheath Industrial – south
of Kuilsriver golf course – remain south Bottelary Road till clear of CTR

Kenilworth 19 departure – Climb to 1500ft routing south of Guguletu Vlei towards

D200 flights – expect routing via Kenilworth / FAYP
Coastwise routing – 1000ft or below between Muizenberg – Macassar Beach –
along northern boundary of FAP33
Peninsula flights – expect routing via Kenilworth
All aircraft operating within CTR must have Mode C transponder, unless issued with
a squawk, then use A2000 while operating within CTR and Special Rules Area
Special VFR subject to ATC approval

Following affective from 10 June 2010 till 11 July 2010:-
1. TEMPORARY RESTRICTED AIRSPACE FIFA SWC VENUES:
Refer AIP SUPPL S044/10 for full information:-
Air Defence Identification Zone Cap Town (ADIZ)
• 50NM radius centered on VOR CTV from GND/SFC to unlimited from 22h00 on 10
June 2010 till 2200 on 6 July 2010.
• Aircrew to have SSC.
• SFC flights will require FAC from SAAF.
• SFC flights are to submit ATS flight plan, with FAC indicated in Field 18 as
RMK/FAC……………
• When operating within lateral boundaries of ADIZ, aircraft must be transponder
equipped
Temporary Restricted Airspace: Greenpoint Stadium
• Radius 5NM centered around Greenpoint Stadium from GND to 2500ft AMSL
• Clearance to enter required from Greenpoint Venue Control on 132.25MHz
• No training flights or recreational flights allowed within airspace when active
• Active days as follows:-
o Between 0930 and 1430 on 21 June 2010
o Between 1200 and 1700 on 3 July 2010
o Between 1630 and 2130 on 11, 14, 18, 24 and 29 June 2010, and 6 July
2010
Security Screening Process
If not already in possession of SSC, apply at least 48 hrs prior to entering ADIZ (RSA citizens)
and 7 days prior to entering ADIZ for foreigners

You need:-
• ID; or
• Passport
• Pilot license; or
• Letter from flight school/company/club or association stating your status

Above info with the SSC application form (see form attached to email) and send to
[email protected] and follow up with a phone call after to 012 312 2625
Flight Authorisation Process
Obtain FAC from SAAF at least 24hrs prior to planned flight (you can use FAC Application
form attached to email as it lists all the info the SAAF will require) and applications submitted
via:-

Fax 012 312 2625
Email [email protected]
Look out for the Astra/Hawk/Gripen on your wing if you don’t have valid SSC’s and FAC’s!!!

Nobody is disputing that... what they are disputing is the slap dash way this was thrown together in the last two weeks without much consultation or warning giving operators little time to make alternative plans. some of them... especially this involved in tourism stand to lose millions. who is going to compensate them?

And there is a rumour on the ground that this has less to do with security and more to do with FIFA not wanting any planes coming near the stadiums for tourism fly-pasts or to take video footage of the events. Once again FIFA is worried about people making money that it does not get a cut of.

Do we still have something like Air Defence ?
2 or 5 New Griffin Jets and a few Hawks ? Do we still have pilots for these craft ?
Do we still have any Air Mechanics ?
What are they going to do ? Swat the missiles or what ever, out of the sky ?
Ho:confused:w is this ragtag Air Force going to prevent anything ?

:erm: Not sure where you get your figures from, but we have ordered 26 Gripens - 9 currently active in service and 24 Hawks in service. All piloted and crewed.
 
Yeah you saw them flying over the stadium during the opening, nice looking planes.
