The IFP called on Thursday for a lifetime ban of drunk drivers on South Africa's roads.

"It is shocking to note that the festive season is not even officially over and already 1279 people have been killed on South Africa's roads," Inkatha Freedom Party's spokesman Velaphi Ndlovu said in a statement.
 
Do the IFP still exist?

Haven't heard anything from the IFP in a long time.

I thought that with Zoomster being Zulu the ANC would have already attracted all the IFP voters.

Another genius idea from South African politics. Do these people ever think before opening their mouths? Do they ever consider the consequences of their moronic ideas? Why not extend this this to everyone that causes an accident? Get the whole country banned from driving! We'll definitely move up the productivity scorecard then!

Actually you are wrong, I think, the law states clearly that any vehicle, vessel, house, property etc etc etc used in a crime or bought with the proceeds of crime can and will be forfeited to the state.
The person paying the lease is still responsible to the lending house

Yeah, let's have disproportionate punishments for all crimes. Speeding - R 1 000 000 fine. Zoning violation - lose your house. Theft - lose a hand. Adultery - death by stoning. To hell with being civilised, we should just adopt Sharia law.

disproportionate ??? Do you work for the ANC? Why is it disproportionate to lose your car is you are convicted of driving drunk??:rolleyes:

Quite happy to trample the banks' rights?

No one in their right mind is going to continue paying an installment on a car if forfeited, so how will the bank collect it's debt if the underlying security doesn't exist anymore?

In any case, maybe someone here can properly explain how forfeiture works, say on a property with a first mortgage bond registered. I seriously doubt those bond holder rights just magically disappear. In most cases, those assets will have been bought cash however.

Back on topic, you're idea won't work.

Here in the civilised world, we weigh up the negative effects of emotionally-justified-but-idiotic ideas against the net cost of implementing them. We have a constitution that guarantees everyone's rights, and keeps a check on stupid laws.

I am going to disagree with your example, someone that caused an accident rarely does so because of an act on his/her behalf that they control: An animal/pedestrian walks in front of them, they are momentarily distracted by something at the worst possible moment, a tire bursts, any number of reasons why someone might cause an accident.

There are a few things that can cause an accident that you can argue is the persons fault:
  • speeding
  • using cellphones other electronic devices in such away that they do not pay attention to the road
  • driving a car that is not roadworthy
  • driving after taking heavy medicine or drugs
  • driving while intoxicated

In my opinion repeat offenders of the last category should all have their drivers licenses banned for life! (and with speeding I mean extreme speeding, not driving 20 or 30 over the limit, but **** like over 120 in a heavily populated area, etc)

There is simply NO EXCUSE to drive while drunk. The problem is defining "drunk". Most people feel they can "handle a few drinks", but where do you draw the line? At the point where you kill an entire family because you lost control of your car?

So what about our rights to not have to worry about drunken drivers killing our friends and families? I agree a lifetime ban is a bit harsh, I would propose a two stage system: First time will land you a one year ban, second time a lifetime ban. If caught DUI while under said ban, 1 year in prison.
 
We have some of the best legal system.. we have no people who enforce it.
 
The state ask us to be considerate when getting behind a wheel. The state as us to be responsible when getting behind the wheel. The state don't listen to the public who ask for things to curb speeding drivers and drunk drivers. In our road there is a creche type school at the end of the road so you have people walking little ones to school and also you have elderly people walking around and children going to school and also people walking in the road like they own it. I believe, before we moved in, that the community asked the traffic department to install speedbumps because people were speeding in a residential area and to put up yield signs for side roads but they were turned down. What more must the general public do when the state don't give a shyte about you until election time? The same with the state asking us to fight crime, to be the eyes and ears on the ground, when the police department is corrupt and there is a lack of willingness on the authorities part to do anything?
 
I say implement compounding punishments.

For example
First time, R500 fine, second time, R1000 fine, 3rd time, R2000 fine etc etc

OR
Not paying a fine, 1 year jail time, not paying 2 fines, 2 years, not paying 3 fines - 4 years etc etc.

People make mistakes, but if you repeat those mistakes you should be punished more harshly.
