And just to tell a few personal stories, due to neighbourhood watch involvement:

You find drivers stopped and passed out at traffic lights or parked next to the road or only partly off the side, passed out. We found a young women lying on the ground next to her car in someone elses driveway, passed out. Two or 3 incidences of drunk drivers failing to negotiotiate turns and driving thought fences or other barriers, in dry conditions and not at high speed...

Hard to find SA stats or studies published online.

And I assume if one contacts the Medical Research Council one might be able to get the stats in a proper fashion.

And "40% of drivers who die on the road have alcohol levels in excess of .08gms/100ml" is pretty damning. If one can take care of that and sort out the pedestrains then you will probably lower the death toll on SA roads by 50% quick quick.

From that "More than 60% of hospital trauma cases are linked to alcoholic consumption" ... which would say alcohol should be banned altogether as then we can free up our doctors, since we have a shortage of doctors.

I agree with daveza .... make the charge fit the crime !!!
implementing severe punishment without a real major crime(while against the law) .. seems a bit harsh too me
