Article: Calls for fireworks ban

The use of fireworks during Guy Fawkes celebrations should be banned, the City of Cape Town said on Thursday.

The city had received numerous complaints related to the use of fireworks during the celebrations, mayoral committee member Alderman JP Smith said.

Let's also ban alcohol, cars, music, people, anything that may cause irritation or harm to others.

So much easier to ban than to manage.

JP Smith is a Puritan. Can't we ban JP Smith? I pay that guys salary. I'm not happy with him, can't he be dismissed?

Only 4 states in the US have banned fireworks.

For the majority of people fireworks are not a nuisance. And for many they're a source of fun. Duh.

I agree with this. This is getting out of hand now.

How about we ban pet owners who don't take the slightest precautions to protect their animals over Guy Fawkes - and we can also ban yapping irritating pooches while we are about it.

Yep, strange how these people don't have an issue with their dogs barking non-stop throughout the rest of the year...

I kind of approve of the current "solution"

Fireworks are banned in residential areas, except for designated areas where people can go and let them off. It just needs to be enforced properly.

Isn't it illegal for under 16 to handle fireworks? What was the kid doing with a firecracker?
Banning it is not going to work, rather informing the public how to correctly set up fireworks would help and enforcing the no under 16 rule.

Don't ban ....

1) You can't teach idiots anything different
2) let them keep blowing themselves up, it's better that way

Whatever they did seemed to work fine in my suburb this year.
It was way better than last year.
I didn't hear a single firework yesterday.

He reckons that banning will block importation and stop availability.

What I don't get is the sale of these "Sky Lanterns". CNA sells these. Surely these are very dangerous things.

Can't do that - it would deny the religious rights of Hindus.

Fireworks?

Or sky lanterns?

I'm not sure of these other issues. But if they ban fireworks per se, then their supply will disappear and kids won't get them. That's the thinking prolly.

We never heard one bang last night.

We should respect each other's culture. Guy Fawkes is a tradition, just like Halloween, Dewali, or anything else. Just because Mr. Smith doesn't like it and his family doesn't celebrate it is not a good reason. He needs to get his own house in order and sort out the Metro police, who are quite useless.
