Heard lots of fireworks last night. It was not a big deal. If people had fun, good for them. Only issue is if they fire it at grass roofs but this was at the beach.

Halloween is however not really an SA cultural thing. It's imported from USA.

In London, the noise starts a week before and continues after. In fact, the smoke is thick (fog) the next morning and there are spent rockets everywhere in the streets.

We've got it easy!

Ban my cultural believes and linked celebrations if you like but then you need to go all the way and ban Diwali celebrations as well. If fireworks are the problem then you to go all or nothing.

While we're on the topic, the problem is generally not the fireworks but those damn useless crackers. Seriously they serve no purpose other than to make some useless sound.

Really, so you don't think those big fek off rockets that can be heard from kilometers away and rattle nearby windows are not a problem?

I'm all in favour of banning fireworks. Diwali is supposed to be the festival of light not bloody noise. The people of Ayodhya lit the way for Ram and Sita to return, they didn't try to deafen them. Diwali/Deepavali literally means a row of lights.

I actually forgot about Guy Fawkes last week (people don't really celebrate it where I'm from). It was pleasant to see the Blouberg night sky being lit up for a few hours. Actually made me go out for a few hours to enjoy the festivities. I too feel they shouldn't bad it. There are always people crying over something, but they stop crying once it's gone. I can't even count the amount of complaints I've seen over noisy jets every year during the Swartkopz/Waterkloof air shows. And then a few days after the airshow everyone has forgotten and move on with their lives. I understand that animals are the ones actually suffering here, not so much the people, but there are means and ways to protect your animals from the loud bangs of fireworks. Either way, stop taking the fun out of Cape Town Smith. Pff.

But the Hindu religion is thousands of years old, fireworks are a much more recent invention that people have adopted because it's a fun way to practice the festival whose key theme is light.

So actually it wouldn't deny any actual religious rights.The age old Hindu tradition is lighting up the place using candles and lamps etc....
 
A colonial remnant. Personally speaking, the world would be a better place if Guy Fawkes succeeded. Vindictive people.
