Article: Cigarette tax soars

Smokers will have to cough up 80 cents more for a packet of cigarettes, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced in his Budget on Wednesday.
 
Well this isn't that bad, 80c. I remember it being worse in previous years.. but the R2.73 per bottle of spirits is truly terrible.

That's very optimistic. The fact of the matter is, and I've seen this many times, when cigarette prices get too high for people to afford, they buy cheap cigarettes, 'Chicago' and whatnot - These cost apparently like 80 bucks a carton or something. So if the idea is to make prices so high people will actually be dissuaded from smoking, this loophole would need to be plugged first.

Good news i stopped because 37 bucks was nailing me, almost 1k on a cigi's a month was excessive.

Hit em hard, 2-5 bucks everytime. The kiddies won't be able to afford it and people will start quitting big time or at least cutting back.

What is the difference between cheap smokes and the expensive ones? Less chance of cancer?
