Article: Cut speed limit: Minister

speed doesnt kill, what r statistics for f1 and moto gp deaths? and drag racing even if illegal or legal?

bad drivers, slow drivers, nervous drivers, not observant drivers, alcohol, bad car parts and tyres kill

ppl say u can only be a defensive safe driver if u drive slowly.. its not true.

Let me guess.. you are one of those ppl that habitually drive over the speed limit, and are impatient and actually probably cause more problems on the road.

ofcourse i drive over the speed limit, speed limit is to restrain the bad drivers from potentialy harming others because they have no skill or good observing ability

impatient because of traffic jams no because i can think of the reason why there would be a traffic jams

impatient because of slow bad driver in right lane on high way yes

There's something wrong with your logic man. The speed limit is applicable to everyone, not just the 'bad' drivers.

Then you should have your license revoked. No questions.

A speed limit applies to all, and if you think you are skilled enough to ignore it, then you aren't.

where do i say the speed law does not apply to me?

i drive 1000+ km per month majority in city and ive never caused an accident while when it is safe disobeying speed laws.

pls explain why autobahn exixts.

It is PRECISELY this type of immature attitude that leads to much of the carnage on our roads.

NONE of us are perfect drivers, and those who think that they are, and are therefore exempt from speed limits and rules of the road are a danger to the rest of us!!

i dont think iam perfect, i just know that i am better having drives with many drivers and seen a lot of things on the road.. my friends even say i am a better driver :D my car is one that is built to handle speed, it is serviced regularly and tyres are good

i dont overtake when it is dangerous i dont zigzag in and out of traffic. i go faster when it is safe to go faster.

motorbikers travelling at the speed limit but cutting thru traffic pose more risk and fatalities
taxi drivers overloading and bad tyres sticking to speed limit pose more risk and fatalaties

speed doesn't kill when done correctly
bad drivers and cars kill
and booz

OK Mxit boy please just warn us all where you live and we'll make damned sure we don't drive anywhere near you.

Has anyone ever told you that you come across as an arrogant little p***k ? Because that's all I am seeing, and that makes you as lethal as a drunk taxi driver in my book.

i dont understand your logic here man?

r u a smoker or a drinker? do u smoke dagga or drugs? do u own a cell phone in the car?

smoker - ur smoke would likely have gone in a public area where it is illegal to smoke; does law now not apply?

drinker - 2 beers/1 glass and ur somewhat intoxicated, does no drinking law now not apply?

smoke drugs - if u do it where it is safe does law not apply?

cell phone use in car - does law now not apply?

...of course the law still applies to all!!

Couldn't give a continental how much you drive....

Your attitude is precisely the problem, and I can guarantee you that you are not as good a driver as you think you are.

Autobahn's exist because Germany has a bloody rigorous exam before you're allowed to use them, and I'm 10000000% sure you would fail the exam with flying colours.

where the speed limit is 110 km/h indicate that a reduction in speed limit can save lives.
A reduction in "bloody agent" taxi's on our roads can save lives too! While our lovely minister is conjuring up all these wonderful solutions, let me join his school of thought and suggest that we revert back to Neanderthal fiction and start 'Flinstoning it' to work. Whatanob!

my attitude is not the problem. my attitude is balanced and understand that while it is safe to go fast in certain areas, other road users' can affect my outcome. that is why there are times it is safe to speed, same principle of auttobahn.

the problem is other drivers negligence/skill/state of vehicle/intoxicated/fake licence affecting the outcome of those safe/skilled/good car drivers who understand speeding when safe does not kill.

pls dont talk kak about autobahn and rigorous exams read the wiki and educate yourself http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_autobahns

Shame on the minister for gambling with the lives of South Africans! It is a cold-hearted and cynical calculation that aims only to reduce the carnage on our roads - the government should be doing all it can to eliminate deaths entirely. After all, what value can one place on even a single human life?!

Of course one can't introduce a safety-first policy overnight, so I propose a phased approach:

Step One: Immediately reduce the national speed limit to 10km/h on freeways and 5km/h in urban areas.
Step Two: After 12 months, reduce road usage by 50% by permanently closing half of South Africa's roads - the current policy of not performing road maintenance is inefficient, takes too long to be effective, and needlessly gambles with motorist and pedestrian safety.
Step Three: After 24 months, ban all motorised vehicles with an engine capacity over 25cc.
Step Four: After 36 months, permanently close all paved roads wider than 1m.

This will ensure South Africa is a World Class African Country.

Anything less just compromises safety too much. It's high time this government took to heart the real interests of all South Africans!

No, your attitude is the problem.. accept it and move on. Its NEVER safe to speed, period.
Other drivers are not the problem, you and your type are the problem.

Oh, and as for the autobahn and exams.... read up on the German Driving license....http://germany.angloinfo.com/countries/germany/drivlicence.asp
