Article: Cyclists ignore safety measures

Many cyclists in South Africa do not practise precautionary measures when using public roads, a survey revealed on Friday.

About 61 percent of cyclists questioned said they did not always wear helmets when they were on the road -- despite 64 percent agreeing that they did not feel safe on the roads.

When I drive a car, I hate pedestrians. When I'm a pedestrian, I hate motorists. But no matter what my mode of transport might be, I always hate cyclists.

Wait for the "they don't need to wear helmets if motorists were cautious"

I was in Hillcrest the other morning and a cyclist jumped one of the (many) red robots you encounter while at the same time a car started going (who was at the green light) and you should have seen the finger work the cyclist gave the motorist.

Yeah, those fracking doped-up cyclists only have themselves to blame!

Bleh this runner gave us the finger because she said the man was green. But we said you still look left and right before just trusting that green man robot

I'm quite a cautious person, always thrying to predict what some idiot might do when i'm travelling (car/bike/foot).
But one rule always remains.. If it's bigger than you, rather give it way :)

Saw a cyclist on the N1 a few months ago as you entered Cape Town. Seriously stupid. Must be one of those drugged ones.

After researching bicycle helmets I came to the conclusion they're at best a waste of money, at worst dangerous. If they were redesigned and tested in a correct manner they could potentially provide head protection. But then would anyone wear them anyway because at the very least they'd be hot?

"The fact that the majority of cyclists say they don't always wear a helmet makes it especially important for drivers on our roads to remain vigilant and drive carefully when they spot a cyclist," she said.
A standard bicycle helmet isn't going to do you the slightest bit of good if you get hit by a car.

Agreed. Or when face connects to road.

They really should be wearing full face helmets like bikers do ...

As a plus we won't have to see their arrogant smug faces ... :)
