Article: E-tolling to go ahead

Nah, I can't support a project where the cost of simply getting the money is 35% of total cost and with the 10% duplicate number plates on our roads, I can't give my banking details to people who will let me pay for the baasted that has copied my number plate - So, NO, I'm not even contemplating getting an e-tag

What happens if you don't register?

As the toll is capped, does it matter if you get an ETag?

From what I understand if there is a cap, and you do a reasonable distance each month, you have no advantage in having an ETag.

Of does the cap only apply to ETag holders?

Finance minister Pravin Gordhan last month announced that government would allocate R5.8 billion to the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, for which e-tolling was created. Government said, as a result of this, the toll fees could be reduced and a cap of R550 per month would apply to light motor vehicles.

The reductions and the cap, however, only apply to vehicles with e-tags and those without are left with the same tariffs that were decided on in August, where light vehicles will pay 58c/km. This comes amid several public calls by different parties for citizens to not get e-tags as a form of protest against the system.

What exactly is the point of this stupid tag if they can read the number plate?

you have put your finger on it - TO GET ACCESS TO YOUR BANKING DETAILS AND THEREFORE TO STEAL YOUR MONEY

Thanks daveza I didn't spot that. So there is a real advantage to having an ETag if you will go over R550.00 per month.

Also having an ETag gets over the false number plates possibility.

It will be interesting to see how many people stick with no ETag when they get bills over R550 every month.

I think the idea is to just ignore the bill when it arrives.

It's a gamble but if everyone, or even just the majority, ignores the accounts it will become impossible to institute legal proceedings against such a vast number.

South Africans are notoriously feeble about civil disobedience but the resistance to the tolls are a definite change - and both Sanral and govt seem to be unusually anxious....

Unless I'm threatened with going to jail like the Census. NO!!!

at this stage more than 90% of the population is against e-tolling - Where will they jail all these people?

erm, NO!

The person with your duplicate plate will have his number read and the funds will come off YOUR e-tag account, as if you forgot your e-tag at home or your e-tag is broken, so Sanral will just have a more convenient way of getting you to pay for the other guy - Imagine the hoops you are going to have to jump through to get that money back from them :)

And now the thugs want to suspend your drivers license via legislation if you don't pay.

What about those who go on holiday via the toll road and don't see the invoice within 7 days? Honestly such crappy and dictatorial measures.

How do you figure that?

Because the gantry reads the ETag and the fee is debited to the ETag.

With false numberplate, no numberplates or covered numberplates, it is still the ETag that registers.

If there is no ETag the numberplate will be checked the registered owner will be billed fase or not. Therefore the ETag is actually
protection against false numberplates.

If the gantries were purely numberplate recognition systems such as they have in the UK for example, (for speed checking) the argument about false plates would be valid.

Perhaps that is why SANRAl went with the ETag?

Also perhaps SANRAL should abolish the tolls and implement speeding fines? The technology is all there!

Erm no.

Nobody with false number plates are going to get an eTag fitted. However, if I have an eTag and someone ELSE falsify plates on their car to resemble mine, then I'm going to get billed for it...and SANRAL states that any deductions will be valid until you, the etag holder successfully disputes it.

So getting an eTag is an invitation for getting your license plates cloned.

Sorry, but that doesn't make ANY sense at all.

I had an elderly retired friend at church who kept getting fines because some idiot had copied his numberplate.
He eventually had to de-register his car and re-register it at his own expense to stop the fines coming.
So how exactly is this system going to prevent these crooks from copying your plates and having it charged to your account?
